Seabiscuit

I read something about how the Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral race was exactly 80 years ago today, November 1, 1938.  So then I searched for the video (watching the real one and the movie clip, which is below).

I only saw this full movie once, and the most clear thing I remember about it was this final scene. Specifically the part where Seabiscuit is in the very back until another jockey (George Woolf, who rode Seabiscuit in the War Admiral race and understood how he operated) deliberately pulls his own horse back so that Seabiscuit can look him in the eye and find the competitive grit he needs to really take off.  It's such a kind and sacrificial background move, one that empowered Seabiscuit and Red to ultimately win the race, and it's that quiet moment of real friendship right before the big win that's my very favorite part of the movie.  Sooooo good!! ❤  Definitely just awkwardly teared up at my desk while watching it again... also, I love that the horse that pulls back is #7. lol

Anyway, just a mini-reminder that the small acts of kindness matter, sometimes enormously.  What a gift it is to deliberately step back from pursuing your own goals in order to come alongside someone who feels like they have fallen behind, like they're alone in the back watching everyone else move forward at a pace they just can't keep up with.  I know how broken it can feel to be in that position, and I'm guessing most of us do.

Sometimes we just need one person to notice that we are struggling and to show up with strong support... one friend standing beside us to strengthen our confidence and remind us to fight for ourselves, then eventually to share in our victories.  I'm thankful for those who have done this for me, and I want to pay attention and do this for others when they are hurting.

Mmkay that's all for now.  Happy November 1st!
