P-E-R-S-O-N-A-L-I-T-Y

*2013 EDIT:  Character trumps personality, always.  The heart and character of any person (whether they value and seek God) is by far the most important thing about them!  I still believe there is a lot of merit to this Personality theory and that opposites often attract, but I've realized that as Christians, it is healthiest for us to find our true "opposite" in Jesus - that He completes us perfectly and He is strong where we are weak.  He knows what we need and He always cares and does exactly what is best for us.  We will naturally connect and click better with certain personality types, but our goal should be to seek God first and form relationships with others who seek Him first! ❤
Original post:
We learned about this at our court reporting seminar this year, and the more I've thought about this, the more fascinating it has become to me!  The four basic personality types are Driver, Expressive, Amiable, and Analytical.  There is obviously a very broad range of people in each category, but certain characteristics they tend to share.

So which description fits YOU!?

The DRIVER (Choleric)
Extroverted Thinker
Strengths:  Drivers are independent, strong-willed, direct, and practical!  They love to be in charge and have things done their way.  They want results, and they are confident in themselves and willing to take risks.  They are organized, forceful, efficient, hard-working, and very decisive.  They have strong opinions, they speak boldly, and they are very persuasive.  They are task-oriented, knowing what they want and how to get there.  They do not shy away from conflict.  They typically communicate quickly and get right to the point.  Weaknesses:  They can be brash, impatient, and domineering.  They sometimes come across as threatening and intimidating to other types.

They desire respect and control; they hate to feel that someone is taking advantage of them.  They are very goal-oriented and want to be measured by results!  *Drivers are best paired with Amiables.  In a major crisis, their personality may temporarily shift toward the Expressive (from calculated thinking to more emotional reactions.)

The EXPRESSIVE (Sanguine)
Extroverted Feeler
Strengths:  Expressives are warm, outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic!  They are good communicators and make natural salesmen and story-tellers.  They are energetic, highly competitive, excitable, and good at inspiring others.  They are imaginative dreamers and natural encouragers. They are people-oriented, so they love to be part of the group and they're always ready for something new and exciting!  Weaknesses:  They tend to exaggerate and may leave out certain facts and details.  They get bored easily and sometimes struggle to follow through on their goals.  They can be messy and they lack a tolerance for details.  They sometimes have unrealistic expectations.

They desire recognition and appreciation; they hate lack of attention and feeling isolated.  They usually want to be measured by applause and feedback!  *Expressives are best paired with Analyticals.  In a major crisis, their personality may temporarily shift toward the Driver (less emotion-based and more forceful/efficient decisions.)

The AMIABLE (Phlegmatic)
Introverted Feeler
Strengths:  Amiables are kind, supportive, patient, and dependable. They are often soft-spoken, thoughtful, and genuine.  They usually enjoy art and poetry and are sensitive to the emotions of others.  They are team players who have a stabilizing effect on others. They are easy to get along with, trustful, and make good listeners. They are relationship-oriented, and their priority is to promote group happiness and minimize conflict.   Weaknesses:  They are not assertive and typically will avoid confrontation.  They can be indecisive and wishy-washy, and they tend to conform to what others want from them. They find it difficult to say no and thus may be over-committed.  Often too passive and compliant, failing to speak up for themselves.

They desire stability and harmony; they hate change and chaos. They want to be measured by their friendships and what their close friends think of them!  *Amiables are best paired with Drivers. In a major crisis, their personality may temporarily shift toward Analytical (moving from warmth to more calculated and guarded reasoning.)

The ANALYTICAL (Melancholy)
Introverted Thinker
Strengths:  Analyticals are very logical, disciplined, and detailed.  They are well organized, task oriented, and diligent workers.  They are very perceptive and are typically good problem solvers.  They are cautious and thorough in reviewing the facts before making a decision.  Weaknesses:  They are usually perfectionists, so they want to save face and never get caught making a mistake.  They can be withdrawn, quiet, even sullen at times.  They think analytically and tend to get stuck on certain subjects.  They are not typically risk-takers, and they can be overly critical and pessimistic.

They desire accuracy; they hate to be wrong or to be criticized. They like to work hard and stay busy, and they prefer to be measured by activity!  *Analyticals are best paired with Expressives.  In a major crisis, their personality may shift toward Amiable (less guarded and more free/emotive).

In case you've never met me, I am probably 75% Amiable, and slightly Analytical.  =)  Both of those describe me surprisingly well!  (On the test, I had a few points on the Expressive category, but zero in the Driver, which made total sense to me.)

And opposites really do attract.  Throughout my life, I've always been drawn to people with the strong, decisive Driver personality... even including Joyce Meyer!  There's my mom, Julie, Holly (wow, every word of that description fits her), Josh, Natalie, Malori, etc.  (And just looking at the personality descriptions, it makes perfect sense that when those personalities pair up and God's not in it, the Amiables may be used and trampled.)  I have always had a lot of fun and gotten along very well with the outgoing Expressives... including my sister and Sarah and Chet Lee!  Another Expressive that I love is Beth Moore! :)

I get along well enough with other Amiables and Analyticals, but it's sometimes hard to know what they're really thinking, and it helps to have an extroverted Expressive or Driver to liven things up.  Anyway, it's just so interesting and cool how the different personalities mesh together and how we all help balance each other out!!  The most balanced, fun, loving marriages are usually between people who are on opposite ends of the spectrum... and the more boring or volatile marriages are typically people who married their own personality type, which will naturally seem attractive at first.  So interesting.  So to sum that up, my perfect future match would be a Driver guy who is passionate about God and passionate about me and will not take advantage of my softer personality.  Oh, and on a bit of a depressing note, I cannot think of one Driver guy that I know at the moment.  Several women; zero men.  What is that about??

Family-wise, I think that my Dad is an Analytical and my Mom is a Driver.  Rach is an Expressive, and I'm definitely an Amiable.  I love that we have all four styles right there... and it makes sense that Rachael and my Dad have always been super close, and my Mom and I have always been super close.

We even have all four personalities in our "mini-group."  Malori = Driver; Chet = Expressive; Nathan = Analytical; and me = Amiable.  It's just funny how it naturally pairs up like that. :)

Anyway, I honestly love it that relationships matter most to me and that I live from my heart, although reading that "Amiable" description makes it even more clear to me why the sudden loss of love, friendships, respect, and reputation affected me sooo dramatically, and why other types genuinely couldn't understand why I could not let that go and move on and feel good about myself.  And it's interesting how much I did downshift into the Analytical, calculated, guarded outlook for a while after all that... staying really busy and active and hoping that would solve the internal problem.

It's been fascinating to study this and think about how it relates to everyone I know, but when I look at my own life, I see a lot of room for improvement... I keep reminding myself that people can change and improve, and that God knew what He was doing when He created me this way!  I want to stay true to who I am, but I do not want to live a weak, nice and quiet, indecisive, conforming (unoriginal) little life.  I want to be a strong Amiable like Dave Meyer; not to let passivity or fear get the best of me!  Since I truly am indecisive, I still don't know exactly what that means or what I should be doing to change, or even whether I'm supposed to be a leader or do something more behind-the-scenes with my life.  Blah.  In all my decisions, I hope to become more concerned with what God thinks than what people think of me, because as much as I'd like to pretend I'm above it, that is a continual struggle.  I want to listen to Him and then step out in faith on what He says without needing the approval of anyone else!

One chart I read gave Biblical examples for each category:
Paul = Driver (decisive leader, bold faith, not afraid to confront others, etc.)
Peter = Expressive (passionate, emotional, sometimes speaks before thinking, etc.)
Abraham = Amiable (devoted follower, faithful, chooses peace and harmony over self-promotion, makes poor decisions when he feels threatened by people, etc.)
Moses = Analytical (cautious and reluctant leader, highly educated but humble, meticulous and detail-oriented, etc.)

So I thought that was pretty interesting, and they all made sense for loads of reasons.  It's comforting to me that God can use anyone, and that He can balance out any personality and use our weaknesses for good!

"We are weak, but He is strong.  Yes, Jesus loves us..."  ❤

Okay, I'm going to bed now!  :)

Update

Sooooo, here's what's new with me lately....

Work has been super busy since I got back from Vegas, but in a good way.  Extra transcript money is always appreciated.  Especially since we're now planning an NYC TRIP for the first week of December!  So excited for that!  Winter, Christmastime, the big tree, ice skating, a broadway show, and my favorite friends!!  (And bonus, it'll be right after we've all run the half, so hopefully I'll be in good shape.  Not that it matters much; I always feel cuter in Winter!)

This week, my judge is taking Wednesday through Friday off for vacation!  So I stayed there yesterday to finish up a transcript, but now I'm on day one of my four-day weekend! :)  Love it!!  This morning, I went with my family to look at houses for my sister.  We looked at a few that she immediately vetoed, but finally found one that's pretty perfect, and she may put down a deposit tomorrow, which is exciting!  Malori and I are heading to Hideaway for dinner tonight, and I'm already excited for that.  Then I'm having lunch with Morgan Elizabeth and mom and Lynda, which should be fun!  Then going back to T-town tomorrow to celebrate Cassidy's birthday with dinner and the Van!

We celebrated my awesome friend, Chet Lee's 22nd B-day last weekend. His reaction when he opened the Shake-weight was awesome! :) He finished his crazy 6-pack abs diet, and we had cookiecake and it was fun. As he said in a text, "Praise the Lord for sugar and chocolate!" :)

Despite that, I'm happy to say I've been making healthier choices and exercising really consistently, but the weight is being pretty stubborn.  Whatever... I'm staying the course.  I do need to get back to serious running... time to really be training for the Half!  Malori and I have decided to do one race each month August through November, starting with the Quarter Marathon on August 7th.  Then we'll do the Race for Freedom at Lake Hefner in September, Race for the Cure in October, then the Half!!  Woohoo, get excited! lol

I've been thinking a lot lately about the personality test we took at our CR seminar, but that's a subject for another (much lengthier) post!!

Lastly, thanks to my awesome (and generous) Dad, I got an amazing new car a couple weeks ago!!  The red IS-250 convertible... and I LOVE it! =D

So anyway, life is good; God is good!

Joy

"In contrast to happiness stands joy. Running deeper and stronger, joy is the quiet, confident assurance of God's love and work in our life - that He will be there no matter what! Happiness depends on happenings, but joy depends on Christ."

This was a quote in the study notes in my Bible, and it made me think of my friend, Liz.  She lives with real hope and talks about God's faithfulness even in the most difficult seasons of life.  She trusts God in the midst of the storm, and lives from her Spirit rather than her soul and emotions.  And I love that!

(I also love this picture.  And I love Christmas!!!)  Anyway, God is good and I feel blessed.  At this moment, I have so many friends who love, encourage, inspire, and challenge me -- and we really have fun together, even in the simplest things.  So I'm thankful for good, solid friendships... and for this little reminder that the JOY of the Lord is my strength.  That no matter what losses I may endure, God truly is "the strength of my heart!"

"Rock and roll, you ain't seen nothin' yet!"

And now, a super-detailed account of my awesome Vegas vacation, purely because I want to remember it! This has not been proofed for grammar. =)

Okay, so I got up at 4:30am, and met Malori at the OKC airport for our early flight out on Friday morning.  I took the motion sickness pills my trainer had recommended, and I did fine on both flights (despite the many warnings about Denver flights being the worst, as well as being seated in the very back row and being told that was the worst place to sit.)  So hooray for that; yay God!  I was frustrated that Malori and I didn't get to sit together on either flight, and the plane didn't have sick sacks in my seat on either flight.  Anyway, when we got to the Denver airport, we had just enough time to rush to board the next flight, and we touched down in Vegas around 9am!

I was pleasantly surprised that our room at the Bellagio was already ready for us around 10am.  After checking in and unpacking (well, I unpacked and Malori laughed about that), we headed to the Jean Philippe Patisserie for lunch.  The entrance is a gigantic glassed-in chocolate fountain (white, dark, and milk chocolate) and they have several amazing, intricate cakes on display.  All the food looked amazing... Malori loved her sandwich and cake, and my croissant and triple chocolate cheesecake pastry was FANTASTIC!  So yes, that got our Vegas trip off to a good start. :)

Then we headed to the Bellagio shops, followed by the Caesar's Palace Forum shops.  (May I just say, Caesar's Palace is overwhelmingly massive.  Wow!)  Anyway, we shopped for a couple hours, going through tons of ritzy, overpriced big brand shops with a few regular shops mixed in.  Didn't buy anything but some MAC makeup, but it was fun!  My feet started hurting (again, didn't follow my mom's advice to bring comfy shoes)... and we got confused on the time bc Malori's phone was still on OK time... so we headed back to our room to change before the show.  Then we realized we had two extra hours to kill, so we went to the Bellagio Art Gallery, which was my first art gallery experience.  Interesting.  Had I known it would be uber quiet, I wouldn't have worn my clompy shoes.  Oh well.  We saw several interesting and impressive art pieces, as well as some Picassos that I believe any kindergarten student could have painted.  (Not that I want to have anything in common with Cal Hockley, but I'm really not Picasso's biggest fan.)

Anyway, after the art gallery, we headed to the Wynn hotel.  We looked around for a while, then saw LaReve.  Our seats were great, and the show was fantastic.  I'm always so impressed by the talent of those cirque du soleil-style performers.  But this show had a dramatic love story running through it, which ended with a bed dropping from the ceiling... then the lead couple gets in the bed, and as it's floating back into the sky, four massive flowers open from the corners of the bed.  Far more cheesy and funny than offensive.

So at this point, we knew that Chet and Jeff's flight was running 40 minutes late.  After the show, we made one quick stop at the Wynn's "Magical Lake of Dreams."  This needs explanation... before the show, we stumbled on this area, and the gold backdrop wall with the waterfall running down it was really beautiful in the sunlight.  We were impressed and thought it would be gorgeous at night... but for some strange reason, atop the gold wall, there was a gigantic animated frog singing "What a Wonderful World."  It totally caught us off guard, especially considering the usual pretentiousness of the Wynn, and it was hilarious!!  So after a few pics of that, we took a cab back to our hotel.

We watched the water show a couple times (always one of my favorite things!) then went upstairs and waited for the guys to get there.  It was a really bad idea to stop moving at that point, because we ended up arguing over which one of us had to get up and open the door for them! lol  So the four of us talked for a while, then watched the water show, then finally decided to have dinner at this little place outside Caesar's Palace called Serendipity.  So much fun!!  Chet and I split a cheeseburger and sweet potato fries (new thing, hooray), which was great.  Chet was frustrated and kept commenting on the amount of ice cream people were leaving behind in their desserts, so Malori agreed to pay for his if he could finish the entire thing.  He ordered the "Forbidden Broadway," which was 3 scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, topped with a giant piece of chocolate cake.  He gave it his best effort, but finally "hit a wall" and admitted defeat. lol  It was awesome.  Not so awesome was our chatty waitress, who sat down twice to tell us pointless stories.  Although that became pretty funny too.  I laughed harder that night than I had in quite a while!

After dinner, we went to the Paris hotel, where Jeff convinced me and Chet to get out and dance with him at a bar that had a tiny little dance floor.  They played "Yeah" by Ur-sher, and we did the "ghetto dance" for a few seconds, then danced around long enough for Malori to get a picture, then quickly got out of the drunken couples crowd!

We walked down the strip and saw the usual porn flyers littering the streets, but I honestly think it was worse this time.  Having always gone with family before, I've never been out in Vegas after midnight.  Ummm, it was interesting.  The girl in front of us was much too drunk to stand up, so she got a piggyback ride from her frat boyfriend, and her dress was too short to cover her backside.  Yikes.  We stopped and waited to avoid being under them on the escalator... which was good, considering that she fell - in a slow, dramatic, hilarious drunken fall - as they were on their way up.  Ahh, her parents must be proud.  We went to the Planet Hollywood hotel and checked out their casino, and while walking through the open casino, stumbled on barely-dressed girls dancing on tabletops in some slutty competition.  Seriously, where are we!?  Did we stumble into a men's club accidentally?  I know Vegas can be pretty trashy, but to have that in such an open area was bizzare.

So after all that, we came back to Bellagio and watched Jeff play Roulette for a few minutes, then finally went to sleep!  Saturday morning, Chet and I checked out the Bellagio pools and decided we should all do breakfast at the Pool Cafe.  Good choice by us!  My cinnamon roll was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great!  After breakfast, we walked down to the Aria, MGM Grand, and New York New York hotels.  My feet felt fine all day Saturday, which was awesome!  Our hotel touring was followed by M&M World and Coca-Cola World, which are always cute and fun!  (We used Chet's camera for all our pictures through the trip, which I'm getting from him soon.)  We stopped and sat down and had Coke Icees and Mexican Coke - yum!  Then we went back to our hotel, where Malori and I showered and rested a bit as the guys went swimming for a couple hours.  We all got ready and went to tour the Wynn, mainly so that Jeff could show us the "intoxicating" smell. lol  Afterward, we went to Maggianos for dinner (probably my favorite Italian restaurant ever!)  We toured the Palazzo and Venetian, and got a wonderfully cheesy pic of us with our hands on our heart by a huge American flag.  Then we took a cab to our concert!

The concert was actually at the Mandalay Bay Beach, which was not what we expected, but ended up being far better!  It was 9:00 at night, so the weather and atmosphere was pretty perfect, and the 4 of us picked a spot on the sandy beach by the wave pool and talked and laughed and listened to some awesome music!  One Republic was phenomenal, and my only complaint is that it didn't last longer.  They are genuinely talented -- the lead singer, Ryan Tedder, (thank you, Malori) writes the songs himself and was absolutely fantastic live!  And I don't know enough to know the difference, but Malori was really impressed with the talent of the band and the live string instruments.  So other than the disgusting cigarette butt I found while playfully digging through the sand (ugh!) it was a pretty perfect night.

After the concert, we toured the Luxor hotel... fascinating architecture but strangely prison-like feel.  Then we got back to the Bellagio just in time to see two of the best water shows ever!  At midnight (July 4th), they played Whitney Houston's version of the Star Spangled Banner and went all out with the water show and it was awesome (see video... but it's still far better in person!)  So after all that, we made the ridiculously long walk down the hallway to our room again and went to bed.  Best day ever!

The next morning, I vaguely remember Chet and Jeff leaving for the airport.  Then Malori and I slept in a bit, packed, then did some last minute shopping and had breakfast at the Jean Phillipe restaurant where we'd started our trip.  We got to the Vegas airport early, which was awesome bc they had a California Pizza Kitchen, so we got to do lunch there!  Three of my favorite restaurants (and of course, three of my favorite people ever) in three days made this an awesome trip!!!  The flights back were not bad at all, and Malori and I actually got to sit together this time!  Then Mom was there right on time to pick me up, and I went home and slept in till noon today!  =)
