Flashback Photo Friday ~ 4622!

Writing about Carl's Going Away Party got me thinking about the original Diving Deeper LifeGroup (circa 2008-2011), and very specifically about Bobbi's house at 4622 and all the fun memories made there! =)  She was a great hostess, always willing to open her home ...for LifeGroup, random girls' nights, Easter lunch, CLS parties, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas Shenanigans, LifeGroup leader meetings, birthday parties, and more!

I've been thinking about how I want my house to be a place where people feel comfortable and welcome, considering starting a LifeGroup, and wanting to invite friends over more often (which obviously requires the work of cleaning house and planning ahead and maybe even cooking). But this little trip down memory lane is inspiring me that it would be worth the effort! :)

Here are some fun Flashback Friday pics, all taken in Bobbi's house or backyard!
Top pic = Diving Deeper, the early days.

Not sure if this was a party or lifegroup? Cute either way.
Random Social Network spoof video for Maria! lol (Same night as the top pic).

The moral of this story is three-fold:
1) I'm thankful for Bobbi and for all these great memories!
2) I'm feeling more inspired to get healthier and lose weight! lol
3) I want to host more fun events and low-key nights with friends!

Sooo much blogging lately... I'm gonna slow down now and take the rest of the month off. ;-) Happy Friday!!

Between You and Me...

"And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ's authority for your benefit, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes." ~2 Corinthians 2:10-11

Tiffany and I went to see The Huntsman: Winter's War this weekend. (The previews looked a bit dark and twisty, so I wasn't sure what I would think, but having already seen literally everything else worth seeing, I decided it was worth a shot.) Not a movie I want to own or watch repeatedly, but I'm really glad I saw it...

There's one scene I haven't been able to stop thinking about. Thanks to John Eldredge, I am hyperaware of the spiritual realm, and God is so good at using movies and music to speak to me and often reflect and clarify what is happening spiritually.
(*Spoiler ahead on the movie for anyone who cares.*)

Freya (Emily Blunt's character) is known as the Ice Queen, and love is a criminal offense in her kingdom. She experienced the deep betrayal of the man she loved and the heartbreaking murder and loss of her only child, and in that moment, her heart went dark and cold... and she gained the power to turn things to ice, Elsa-style (Side note: Elsa was actually patterned after this fairy tale character, but Disney changed the story almost completely to be more kid-friendly and appropriate). ...Anyway, because her heart was so wide open to love and trust, she suffered far more pain and agony than her evil, power-hungry sister... so she began to equate love and vulnerability with being pathetic and weak. She wanted to rule in a kingdom of strength, so she hardened herself and trained children up to be warriors who viewed love as wrong and bonding with others as a trap.

In spite of her plan, her two strongest child soldiers, Eric and Sara, gradually fell in love with each other, hiding it from the queen as best they could. They vowed to get married and to fight for each other no matter what came against them, till death do us part...

Of course, the Queen found out. In response, she separated and disarmed Eric and Sara, then brought out several armed soldiers, telling the couple that they could be together if only they could fight through the crowd and get to one another...

They fought with all their strength, slowly taking down those who stood in their way, finally feeling victorious and moving toward each other.  BAM! - Freya threw up a tall, thick dividing wall of ice between them, keeping her hand firmly on the wall as her eyes grew clouded and glassy...

They could see each other through the transparent ice, and Eric saw one of the defeated soldiers get back up and stab Sara from behind, watching in shock as she slowly fell and bled to death. He was able to run away and hide from the queen for several years.

But surprise... You find out later in the movie that Sara is very much alive and well, being held as a prisoner in that kingdom. When they meet again, Eric is overjoyed and she is irate.

In flashbacks, they reveal that although they were only two feet away from each other, the queen was able to control what they saw through the ice wall she put up between them -- causing Eric to see Sara's death, and causing Sara to see Eric giving up and walking away because she wasn't worth the fight...

Sara became angry and bitter, and Eric went into mourning and hiding. She felt abandoned and devalued, and he felt alone and powerless. And they both stopped fighting the real enemy because they were completely deceived about what was actually happening. They stopped even trying to break through the wall or climb over it because everything felt pointless and hopeless.

Wow, that image was seriously powerful to me!

We have a real enemy, and the lens through which we view our lives matters DEEPLY. Regardless of our reality, if Satan can deceive us and change our perception of other people (and vice versa) ...if he can make us believe that we are basically alone and that fighting him is futile, then we will react and behave according to that false belief. And that's exactly what he does - playing games and whispering lies in our minds, trying to weaken our resolve and make us feel outcast and defeated, turning on each other before we even begin fighting him. Ugh, it's painful that he gets away with it so often (at least in my case)!

All of this was timely for me, obviously. Along with seeing that movie, my Ransomed Heart email the other day was about breaking unholy bonds with people, allowing only the love of God, the Spirit of God, and the kingdom of God to come between you. John encouraged readers to pray and bring the cross of Christ between themselves and every other person, especially in situations with unhealthy emotional and spiritual ties...

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” ~Galatians 6:14

"The beauty is, the cross never prevents love from passing between us, never prevents the Spirit of God from coming between us. The cross only cuts off unhealthy things, so there is never any fear in bringing it between you and [anyone else.]" ~John Eldredge

Mmm, I LOVE that. I can picture Christ knocking down the false dividing walls, becoming the only thing standing between me and others, placing His hand over my mind... enabling me to see things clearly, to value and treat every other person as He does. For Him to heal my mind and heart, and forever stand between me and everyone else... I so need that, and I will pray for and pursue it!!

AP Day!

Happy Administrative Professionals' Day to my friend and co-worker, Miss Laura Bower!

I'm so glad she decided to "go boldly" and apply for the job here at the end of 2013! I brought her the "Bailiff Bible" (a notebook Marlene made to help future Bailiffs) to prepare, then I firmly assured her that most of what we deal with in this office is 'boring' civil stuff or drug cases and people pleading guilty to crimes -- that cases rarely go to Jury Trial and we don't get many sex crimes... Her very first week on the job, we had the worst rape case we've ever had, like ever.  And her first Jury Term was six weeks later, where we had a First Degree Murder case! (That really is exceptionally rare, but the timing was interesting).

Anyway, I remember all the legal terminology and our complex docketing system being confusing at first, but she definitely knows and understands more than I do at this point!!  She goes through a ridicu-large amount of files and paperwork every week and often stays late to finish up the Minutes with clear and proper grammar! (*It still cracks me up that they brought in the police dogs to search the building when she came in really late one night - aaah, Creek County security. lol If only they were that on top of it when the building is bustling with real criminals!) Anyway, she's always friendly to everyone that calls or comes in (even when she's trying to be firm with the crazies on the phone). And she's impressively on top of all that's happening in this office... regularly doing the work of three (whilst I do the work of half a person). lol

Since we work with the District Judge in a smaller county, we see a little bit of everything... Felonies, Misdemeanors, Civil Cases, Full-Blood Petitions, Probates, Guardianships, Divorces, etc. Being a Bailiff in Tulsa would involve becoming an expert in one or two of those things, while having a Clerk who always handles the Court Minutes for you. Laura has to be an expert in all of them, as well as taking very thorough Minutes and then returning calls I don't know how to deal with!  She's our Secretary, Bailiff, Minute Clerk, & Law Librarian extraordinaire!! All the women in the Clerk's Office love her, and I know Judge appreciates having someone who works with excellence and integrity (and who doesn't threaten his job or almost burn down the courthouse or write unauthorized notes to the jury or take random days off without telling anyone). lol  (...And I'm thankful that I won't have to be a "witness" to another person getting fired, because that would absolutely never happen here!!)  Seriously, I'm glad to have someone I can talk to who really understands all the ridiculous and bizarre things we see here! lol

Anyway, this made me laugh and think of Laura...

Thanks for all your hard work and crazy long nights, LB!  We appreciate you!!

The last thing in this mini-tribute has nothing to do with work, but it's a Flipagram I made to celebrate her running journey! She really makes it look like fun, but don't be fooled. ;-)

Anyway, huzzah for Laura Allison!!

That's all for today... now I can get in 45 minutes of actual work before lunch time! ;)

The Perfect Storm(s)

"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens...."  -- Whenever I hear thunder outside, my mind jumps to the scene with the kids running into Maria's bedroom, and then I want to sing about My Favorite Things! ;)

It's been a gray and overcast morning, and it was already raining and thundering as I walked back into the courthouse this afternoon. All looks clear now, but tornadoes and hail are predicted later tonight... we'll see what happens!  ...Anyway, I'm putting off my LifeChurch post for this one: Top 10 Tuesday ~ Memorable Storms (in very random order).

1. Disney World 2003, Thunder Mountain & Bakery ~ Me, Rach, JoBug, and Emily were all waiting in line to ride the Thunder Mountain Rollercoaster, and it started to rain... they thought it might stop quickly, so everyone stayed in the crazy crowded line for at least an hour.... we all sat down and got semi-comfy, talking and laughing and meeting the people around us as we waited and waited and waited.  When we finally decided to face the fact that it wasn't going to stop any time soon, (and that we wouldn't wanna be the first on the ride even if it did), we ran across the street to the nearest shop to buy some ponchos.  Then we headed to a little bakery next door and had some amazing brownies and cookies, because chocolate makes everything better. We sat in there talking for quite a while.  I'm sure we complained about the misery of being soaked and missing out on the rides..... but looking back, I remember that day more vividly than anything else about our trip!  All of us being together, totally drenched, talking and laughing and hanging out! (I wish I had a picture here, but no such luck.)

2. San Antonio 2008, Driving from SeaWorld to our Hotel ~ For inexplicable reasons, Rach and I went to SeaWorld in the middle of the Hurricane Dolly storm, and it was already POURING when we got there.  We ran in and grabbed some ponchos, then we got to see the two shows we'd wanted to see, then got to pet and feed the dolphins that morning, which was fantastic.  Rach even got to ride her rollercoaster when the rain settled down for a minute.  (The fact that almost no one else was there that day made everything much faster! lol)  But around noon, it got really bad and they decided to close down the park. :( We saw so many awesome things, and I'd love to do SeaWorld again when we have more time... but what I remember most from that day is them announcing the closing, then Rach and I both taking off our flip-flops so we could run faster to get back to our car.... at that point, we were already drenched, so umbrellas and dainty steps were pointless... splashing around in all the huge puddles and twirling around in the rain was pretty awesome and fun! Sadly, we were about 30 minutes from our hotel, and our drive back was seeeeriously treacherous and terrifying, so I was busy praying for our safety at that point (Rachael drove, thank God). But we lived to tell about it, and it's another rainy day memory that I love now! :)

3. Bobbi's House 2010, Carl's Going Away Party ~ The Diving Deeper Lifegroup was meeting at Bobbi's on Carl's last night with us, sitting around and telling our favorite Carl stories, eating cake and ice cream, watching the weather and patiently waiting for the rain and Tornado Warnings to let up. Chet Lee and Nater-tot were out on Bobbi's front porch keeping us updated. Me and Bobbi were talking about where we should go if there actually was a tornado on the ground in the area. Thankfully, that didn't happen!

4. Boomerang Restaurant 1999, Dinner with Mom, Rach, and Kate ~ The infamous May 3rd tornado of 1999... Eating dinner with Mom, Rach, and Kate after their Club Volleyball practice... watching the weather and realizing we were really close to the tornado, so everyone in the restaurant crowded into Boomerang's kitchen to take shelter! I remember Kate freaking out when they announced the strength of the tornado on the radio... telling Rachael, "This is my serious face!" ...But we were safe, thank God. It was the longest drive home ever, so I remember that pretty well too. (At least we got the comedic relief of watching Kate duck to miss the bird flying out of their front door wreath when we dropped her off!)

5. Big Cedar 2011, Cozy in the Cabin ~ After a fun sunny day at the pools, it started to rain around 5, so we stayed in the cabin, put on comfy clothes and opened the balcony door, talking and snacking and loving the sound of the rain! :)

6. Amarillo Trip, Driving Back to Oklahoma ~ JoBug driving, Mom up front, me in the back. They were listening to the weather on the radio, and major storms were surrounding and chasing us that whole drive. The clouds were scary and ominous, and I was pretty freaked out that a tornado was going to touch down! So I listened to JB's "Hank the Cowdog" tapes with headphones in, trying to tune out the weather reports and the sound of my own fear! lol I remember that drive so well, though... Funny how panic locks in certain memories!

7. Harry Potter World 2015, Huddled in the Tiny Crevice ~ Waiting out a random mid-day rain with Chet, Karli, Jeff, Kyle, and Sarah... we found a tiny little spot where we were all under a covered roof but had just enough room for us to all stand up. I so wanted to go in somewhere we could sit down or at least open my poncho and go twirl around in the rain, but my ideas were quickly vetoed. lol So we leaned against the jagged rocks and watched the fire-breathing dragon and the people scurrying to get out of the rain, and we talked about our gameplan for the rides there and at Disney the next day! :)

8. Kaffe Bona 2011, Watching Joplin Tornado News ~ I was in a BattleCreek small group with Emily, Anna, Sarah, and Brittany. The five of us were meeting for coffee at Kaffe Bona, then ended up watching the news more than talking. The Joplin tornado was near Brittany's sister (it eventually destroyed their home, but they were all safe), and I remember us all being tense as she made several calls to find out where they were and if they were all safe, then praying together before we left.  (Soon after that, the BC group and the lifegroup paired up to go to Joplin and help her family and others affected by that tornado).

9. Random Tornado 2001? ~ Don't know for sure when this was - living in Oklahoma, you get used to tornado season and sometimes end up selfishly feeling annoyed when your shows get interrupted for unending weather updates and warnings... But when it hits close to you, it's always more memorable! I remember one that was close to Midwest City, where we could hear the sirens going off. Mom was watching the TV reports, I was sitting in the hallway by the back bedroom, holding and talking to Kelsey (our Sheltie dog), and Rach was fuh-lipping out because Dad wasn't home yet!! (Spoiler alert - he made it, and all was well! lol)

10. Three Oaks Drive, Butterscotch Pudding ~ This one might be slightly off as it's an early childhood memory, but I remember swimming in our first pool, then when it started raining, me and Rach coming in under the covered patio, getting wrapped up in a towel, then sitting at our picnic table and eating Babah's butterscotch pudding... yummers... looking out at the rain! :)  I also think I remember a tennis shoe phone being out there, which seems super random. lol I'll have to ask Mom about that one...

Anywho, I know it can seem dreary, but my brain mostly associates rainstorms with happy things -- either that or the melancholy-ness matches my Coldplay mood, and that's nice sometimes too!  I'm thankful for the peaceful sounds of rain, and for occasionally being forced to slow down long enough to remember what's really important! Anyway, I'm off to let the girlfranz in and get back to work on my painting! :)

Stay safe tonight!!

(Thankful) Photo Friday!

"As grace extends to more and more people, it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day." ~2 Corinthians 4:15-16

I missed writing a Thankful Thursday post yesterday, so I'm combining that with lots of pictures today!

Today, I am thankful for...

1. Impact Class on the book of Job, learning and understanding more of the many reasons God may allow suffering in our lives.  And hanging out with these guys... :)

 2. My one and only niece - and getting to see and hug her this past weekend! :)

3. Fried apples + peanut butter! :)

4. Getting to help "Grandma Laura" a bit with a project for her Mom's 70th Birthday! :)

5. Being closer to Rach and having a few long talks with her lately!

6. That Josh (my brother-in-law) drove the muddy golf course and finally found a rain-soaked little Bellsy-Bell on Sunday!! :)  No more unsupervised outdoor time for her (at my parents' house).

7. Getting to see the Jaceman, and talking to him on the phone (and Facetime once, accidentally). He started a conversation the other day with, "Lindsey, I just love you!" lol It kinda made my day! (In this pic, he's rolling his eyes at something, after pouring out an absurd amount of ketchup for his lunch of French fries. lol_

8. Photomix to make collages, and Mom for helping me find cute ideas for the upcoming Jelly engagement party! :)

9. It's happened... I've become a Belieber. lol  I'm currently a little obsessed with this song, and thankful for it because I love connecting with music! #neverstopneverstopping ;-)

10. Strawberries & dip... always a fun, refreshing summery treat!!

11. My Mom, who has always been there to listen and support me, and every once in a while, to reign me back in when I'm freaking out about something minor! :)

12. My Dad, whose kindness and generosity in all the little things (and big things, too) does not go unnoticed or unappreciated!

13. The Propel women's group... and getting to celebrate Kelli's birthday last night (also thankful for Ludger's cake)! lol

14. On a deeper note, I'm thankful for Lindsay, the leader of the Propel group and of my smaller women's lifegroup (left of me in the striped shirt in this selfie group pic)! ...She lost her firstborn child, her precious one-month-old daughter, Aspyn Jane, to SIDS just over six months ago. It was sudden and shocking and heartbreaking, altering her life and many others forever. The light of Christ always shines brightest in dark surroundings, and listening to her story and witnessing God work in her heart and through her life in this season has been beautiful. Some of it obviously too sacred to write about here. Her strength is not a self-reliant false bravado, but a growing, deeper strength that comes from depending on God alone to get you through something! I'm genuinely so thankful to know her and my cousin, Kristin, along with Kelly and Amber and Laura and so many other friends who have experienced shattering loss and life-transforming suffering, who cling to God's strength and understand eternal hope in a way most people don't bother to think about!!

15. On a similar note, I'm thankful for God's healing comfort... and that he can use His Word or send other people to comfort us when we need it. Hearing some of the girls talk yesterday about spontaneously breaking down crying or feeling anger that's out of proportion to their situation made us all laugh, and it helped me so much to feel less alone and/or crazy after a rough couple weeks in that department! And that's always something I'm thankful for!! lol

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” ~2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Embracing the New (Age 31)

(I'm focusing on the "new things" part more than the "embracing" ...most of these count for both, but some obviously would not.)  I keep a running list in the Notes app on my phone now. This year's is up to 12 so far. :)  And last year's post can be found HEREAnyway, here are 50 new things I embraced (or at least tried) for the first time between 2-17-15 and 2-17-16 (my 31st and 32nd birthday)...
