You Really Do Matter

"I really felt to remind someone of this important truth today. 

You really do matter. God created you on purpose and for a purpose. 

What you do for the kingdom may not be known, acknowledged, applauded or celebrated by people on earth but it is chronicled in heaven, and you will be rewarded. 

Nothing will let you know if you are really doing something for God alone until the moment you are overlooked, dismissed, ignored or misunderstood by people. That is where the fight of faith begins. Hold on to your call, hold on to your faith, hold on to your God & your purpose. What you do must be important to God or he would not have called you to do it.

When all is said and done, you are responsible to bear YOUR fruit and will not be accountable for anyone else's. Celebrate what is happening around you, delight in the fact that the kingdom is advancing, cheer others on wholeheartedly and genuinely, but don't devalue what you are called to do because it is not as visible or recognized as what someone else is called to do.

It is God who raises people up. It is God who highlights certain things at certain times, but remember it is all about his Glory. All increase comes from God & he measures some things very differently to the way man does.

Don't be discouraged or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you. Don't compare yourself with anyone else for that is unwise and makes your God very small. God is bigger than you think. There is room for everyone in his plan and he celebrates everyone.

Fix your eyes on Jesus not on people and their accomplishments.

Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith.

Jesus is the one that will complete the work he started in you

An Open Letter to Chet Lee...

Hi, Chettles! :) I just had to use that title since he was ranting recently about how he's sooo sick of seeing "An Open Letter to ___" all over Facebook! lol

Here are four collages I made for a birthday card I sent him using the Felt App (as seen on Shark Tank). :)

The first one is several big things he's accomplished through the years I've known him... reaching his weight loss goal, running the OKC full marathon with Gare-Bear, getting married to Karli, quitting the job that bored him, becoming a successful realtor, buying "the farmhouse," and reaching his real estate goals to get his Disney painting! YAY!! It's probably my favorite of the four...I like that it includes two cakes, two running medals, a wig in the box of his stuff from the office, a Mickey mouse hat, the classic thumbs up pose, and the farmhouse JUMP picture!! Inspiring and fun - very Chet Lee! lol

This one is some pics of the kind things he's done for others... including the Eugene Field parties, serving at the Salvation Army, helping after the Joplin tornado, helping paint Sarah's room, cooking for Karli's fam, acid washing my garage floor, volunteering at the Cancer Treatment Center, and building a Habitat for Humanity Home! (Not pictured are the many times he's been generous with his time and money, helped friends move, helped me with yardwork or other random outdoor tasks, helped with dishes and cleanup, been essential to throwing a great party, and been an awesome one-on-one mentor/friend to an elementary student throughout the school year!) YAY again!

Third was "fun memories in fun places" ...the Chubby Bunny game at the bonfire, the Colorado rafting trip with the Lifegroup, Forbidden Broadway sundae challenge in Vegas, so many great stories from the Europe trip with TK and JEM, Jessica's planned-by-Evan-birthday hike, the Bearathon trips, Sam n' Ella's road trips and cookie-time in the park and playground fun, randomly riding in the trunk with Evan, and of course, Splash Mountain at Disney World!! (So many more I could have put on here, too!)

And finally, one with lots of friends and family, saying he is loved and celebrated by so many! (His bday at Gary's house, Harry Potter World with Karli's fam and Michael and Baylee, New Year's Eve with Karli, "Daddy's family" on the Vegas hike, him playing in the confetti while serving at LifeChurch, and a happy Arkansas hike with the Myers and "Pounds!" =) Hooray!!

A throwback to Kyndal's baby shower 3 years ago... (at that shower, Josh posted on FB that he was "anxious to meet Miss Kyndal Faith," and seeing that yesterday, it struck me as so strange and funny that we hadn't even met her yet three years ago.) She's one of my favorite people alive now!

In other news, GET EXCITED, because tonight, I'm going to see the rugged hotness that is Jason Bourne! (The first of those movies came out in 2002, my senior year of high school... craziness. I've loved them all, and I'm so glad Matt is back for this one. Jason Bourne + Vegas = awesomesauce!!)

Then tomorrow, I'm headed to see Jim Gaffigan with Laura and the Wilsons, so I'm excited for that too!  Happy Friday, gang!!

A Birthday Tribute!

Well, today is Grandad's 87th Birthday!! He's been writing out his life story, and I'm excited to read it sometime soon. They're having a party for him tomorrow at JoBug's, but sadly, I'll be at work. (boooo!) A Grandad story from 2011:

Okay, so Grandad and Babah got a dog last week... this was totally random and surprising to me!! When I asked about what made them decide that, Grandad started with, "Well, I read somewhere that you live longer if you have a dog..." 

The Babah (with her cynical sense of humor) interrupted with, "Good Lord, how long do you want to live!?"

He answered quickly (and so perfectly): "Till I die!"

Ohhh, I love that.  I've thought about it a lot since then. 

Because so many people don't really live and don't have much desire to prolong their lives.  He's not one of them.  I love that Grandad wasn't content to sit around and be bored in retirement!  I love that they've been such a part of our lives all this time.  I love that they are both active and doing things that make them happy.  I love that, at age 82, he still reads more books in a month than I do all year.  I love that through all the ups and downs of life, he has not lost heart or lost his spirit (you can tell when people do).  The energy, the hope, the joy, the love of life -- I love it! 

Grandad is so precious to all of us - I just love him, and hope he had a great day today!! 

Here's the caption I wrote on this pic in 2012: I took this pic with my cell phone during a family lunch at Cheddars... it originally included faces, but when I tapped the picture to zoom in, I got this shot... so I cropped it down, making the photo quality a bit poorer...  but I LOVE IT! My precious, tenderhearted Grandad (celebrating his 83rd birthday that afternoon) and precious little Bubby Jace (just a few days past 6 months old).  JoBug is holding him here, but he's clearly reaching out for Grandad, who takes care of him through the week while Rach is at work.  I love the age difference in the hands, I love that it shows Grandad's trademark shirt and pocket and Jace's navy and white striped onesie, and I love the connection and the love it represents.  It just makes me happy.

On Kindness (and Tea Parties)

Well, hopefully I'm not speaking too soon, but I'm thankful that people have responded well to my last post. It's actually opened up some healthy conversations, and it's been really good for me to woman up and clarify where I stand, even as much as it made me nervous. 

(Back in 2008, I made one comment on a YouTube video a Facebook friend posted in support of Obama, briefly and politely explaining why I could not support him. A guy friend of hers that I had never met then left an 8-comment rant (that was when there was a character limit, so it was long enough for 8 comments) personally attacking me, calling me by name several times, saying that people like me sicken him, mocking my faith, being really vulgar about me being a virgin, saying in the most hurtful way possible that I deserved all that happened with Josh, etc., etc. (all of which he could only have known from this mutual friend, who called to apologize but never deleted it - one of many friendships that faded for a reason). My already-broken 2008 self could barely breathe reading the vitriolic attack - I had what was very possibly a real panic attack, then quickly deleted my comment and shut down my Facebook for a few months. (Hooray for the Block feature, amIright!?)  All that to say, thanks for being kind and treating me like a human being with value, even if you strongly disagree with me on politics or religion or whatever else. Kindness and courage, truth and love - they always go together so well!)

Very Difficult Times

"The only hope for America is Jesus. The only hope for our country is Him. If we repent of our ways, stand firm, and say: "We need God in America again!"

I've had this old-school Carman song in my head today, thanks to reading a comment on Facebook where a Christian referred to Donald Trump as "our only hope," an eye-rollingly ludicrous, godless, fear-driven statement... and one that has inspired me to write my first political post in about eight years. I know that my current convictions are not popular - not among Democrats or Republicans or even most American Christians, family and friends included. But popularity is often overrated, and my individual voice and convictions still matter. And at this point, I cannot just nod along and stay silent for the sake of pleasing people and not rocking the boat. So here goes...

There are times when I feel as if I'm living in the twilight zone, and this year has definitely been one of them. The fact that Hillary Clinton is morally bankrupt and would be a terrible leader for our nation should go without saying. I am not a liberal feminist or a Clinton supporter, rest assured. Nothing in my Christian value system aligns with her values or her repeated criminal conduct, and anyone who knows me personally should be quite clear on that concept.

Sadly, I feel a similar disconnection with the Republican nominee, which is the focus of this post. It is strange and sad to see what is happening in the Republican party, and particularly frustrating to watch so many Christians rushing to embrace and put their hope in an arrogant, petty, vengeful, bullying, fraudulent narcissist as their new leader. 

The popular phrase I keep hearing is that "you have to vote for the lesser of two evils," but truthfully, you do NOT ever have to violate your conscience or throw your vote of support behind anyone you genuinely believe to be "evil." When the options are to support Jezebel, support the slightly-less-wicked Ahab, or refuse to personally endorse either corrupt leader, I would have to go with option C. And when the options are to align myself and unite with the Republican party or to align myself and unite with Christ, I'm going with Christ every time. HE is our hope, both individually and corporately. Our hope is not in America's greatness - (which only ever existed because of humble men who depended on God's guidance, and cannot be restored by belligerent men who want to play God). Our hope is not in the easily-swayed and rapidly changing Republican party. And our hope is certainly not in Donald J. Trump.

I don't agree with Jon Stewart on much, but I will admit that the irony is laughable when many of the very same people who strongly condemned and attacked then-Senator Obama for his lack of political experience, improbable Christianity, offensive and divisive rhetoric, elitism, authoritarian stances, questionable past connections, hypersensitivity to criticism, teleprompter-aided speeches, and being "a raging narcissist with no grip on reality," are now embracing and justifying those same qualities in Donald Trump, calling us all to unite around him... Regarding that overused "party unity" plea, there have been many times throughout history (and Biblical prophecy states this will continue in the future) where people have rallied and come together and united as one around a corrupt leader, and in the end, (surprise!) they reaped widespread destruction and devastation. I believe that as a nation we're eventually headed there either way, but I want to hold fast to God through it rather than clinging to a candidate or a party that is compromising and spiraling downward... Christians could do so much more to restore our country if they united in repentant prayer rather than proud Trump support. Humility matters. Truth matters. Maturity and honor and character matter. What unifies you matters deeply. When a conservative Christian is booed off the convention stage for honoring his conscience and encouraging others to do the same: "Stand and speak, and vote your conscience. Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution." ...something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. (Matt Walsh articulates my feelings on that pretty perfectly HERE.) 

On the Republican side, there are voters who believe in and fully support Trump's current stances... and from what I see online, many of his biggest supporters also mimic his character - blowing off legitimate questions and criticisms, projecting false bravado as strength/courage, and mocking and belittling all who dare to disagree with them. (I believe their faith is misplaced and that he will let them down if elected, quickly and unapologetically.) ...Then there are the strategic conservative voters who believe they have a duty to do what is best for America by keeping Hillary out of the Oval Office at all costs, and I understand and respect where they're coming from. And finally, there are the voters who believe it is the best course of action to honor their conscience as sacred and refuse to support any leader they believe to be corrupt (even when the ballot is full of them), and right now, I fall into that last category. The more I have read and watched and listened to each of them, the more convinced I am of this: Both are power hungry, boastful, insincere, vindictive, godless, unrepentant for past wrongs, and convinced they are above the law. They lack true kindness and courage and moral virtue and Godly wisdom. At no point does my poor opinion of Trump mean I think Hillary is awesome. And yes, I fully understand that apart from divine intervention, one or the other will become the next leader of our nation... and that in itself is a tragic, embarrassing situation and a clear reflection of the crisis state America has entered as we've pulled further and further away from God's Word and standards. Also, I do not and will not accept the blame and responsibility presented in the twisted logic that "not voting for Trump means you're voting for Hillary." False. You can be firmly against both candidates, (and again, Matt Walsh makes that point better than I ever could HERE.)

As I learned the hard way in 2008, political debates get crazy vicious, and debates in general quickly drain and exhaust me, so this is not a subject I plan to write about regularly (which is why this one post is so very, very long). I have friends who are far more politically informed and articulate than I, and I'm especially thankful to Josh and Jared for faithfully communicating their conservative Christian viewpoint so eloquently. This election is obviously important, and my goal is to trust in Christ and obey Him in my decision, whatever that means. If things change drastically between now and November and I am able to vote for Trump in good conscience, I will do so.

• Trump, when asked if he seeks God's forgiveness: “I don’t think so. I think if I do something wrong, I think I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture. I don’t. When I drink my little wine - which is about the only wine I drink - and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed. ...I have a great relationship with God. I have a great relationship with the evangelicals. I like to be good. I don’t like to have to ask for forgiveness. And I am good. I don’t do a lot of things that are bad. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. The time of Jesus' return is nearing (THANK GOD!!) and along with that comes increasing deception and godless behavior, twisted Christian doctrines, global chaos, and desperation for strong leaders. I am not surprised or discouraged by the media and the liberal left behaving according to worldly standards, but I am always disheartened when Christians compromise their long-held convictions and try to redefine God's standards. It's happening more and more. "Very difficult times," indeed. I understand that my one vote will not impact much on the state or national scale, but my choice and heart motives will matter between me and God, and my words here might have an impact on someone. I know that this is a confusing and difficult election for many Christians, and I fully understand why. So I'm back to prayer... and I'm praying that God will give His people peace and discernment, and that our faith will not rest on men's wisdom but on God's power. When I am upset and overwhelmed about the current state of humanity, this verse is a great comfort:

“But the Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord still rules from Heaven... for the Lord is righteous, and He loves justice. Those who do what is right will see His face.” ~Psalm 11:4, 7
