Food: A Love Story

Listening to the filler-filled Voice Finale, waiting for them to finally announce the winner... and decided I'd take this time to blog some fun quotes from Jim Gaffigan's book, which I finished earlier today!
I like Jim's comedy, and this title and cover pic made me laugh before ever opening the book, so deciding to buy it didn't take long. Maybe it's sad that I read a book about food from cover to cover, but I definitely laughed a lot and identified with it - #thestruggleisreal - so I'd say worth it! :)

*I'll go ahead and acknowledge the irony up front that I'm writing this right after my Motivational Monday post and that I read this book right before I'm starting Reshaping it All by Candace Cameron Bure! lol Whatever, I'm full of randomness sometimes. The next book review will be inspiring - but this one will make you laugh! =)

Okay, now for the quotes (all funnier if you can imagine him saying it):

(Cover Flap)

"Have you ever finished a meal that tasted horrible but not noticed until the last bite? ...Does the presence of green vegetables make you angry? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are pretty pathetic, but you are not alone... Food: A Love Story is an in-depth, thoroughly uninformed look at everything from health food to things that people actually enjoy eating."

Intro:

What are my qualifications to write this book? None, really. So why should you read it? Here’s why: I’m a little fat. …I wouldn’t trust them skinnies with food advice. When a thin person announces, “Here’s a great taco place,” I kind of shut down a little. How do they know it’s so great? From smelling the tacos? Overweight people have chosen food over appearance. When a fat person talks about a great place to get a burger, I lean in. They know. …What other credentials do you need, really? Stop being a snob. Read the book already.

On always being full:
When I don’t want to eat something, I assume I’m sick and most likely dying. When the instructions on medication say, “Never take on an empty stomach,” I think, Not a concern of mine. I’m sure your mother told you not to go swimming until an hour after eating. This is a virtual impossibility for me. Technically, I should never go swimming.

On pre-dinner prayer:
My wife likes to pause before the meals with our kids and say grace. While I think this is a great opportunity for our children to learn to appreciate the gifts that God has given them, I view grace as kind of the “On your mark, get set…” and the “Amen” as the “Go!” I am pretty sure that’s the way God intended it.

On witnessing a stranger drinking a cup of gravy:
I love the rare moments when I’m truly surprised by American eating… Now, in full disclosure, I love gravy. Who doesn’t, really? But even in my most private moments with gravy, I’ve never contemplated taking a swig.

On seafood:
There is a reason why Red Lobster and the exterminators have the same image on their signs. Shellfish are bugs… there is not a nickel’s worth of difference between a lobster and a giant scorpion.

I don’t even understand how mankind started eating oysters. How hungry would you have to be to make that leap?
Man 1: Hey, I found a rock with a snot in it. I was thinking of eating it.
Man 2: Um, okay. Go ahead.
Man 1: (slurps up the oyster)
Man 2: What does it taste like?
Man 1: Pneumonia.

Now the octopus delights people as high-end cuisine. Eaten, of course, after carefully boiling the octopus properly to rid it of slime, smell, and residual ink. Yum!

On Healthy Eating:
I hate when I try to order a salad and my mouth says, “I’ll have a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.” It’s like I have autocorrect in my mouth.

I go through different stages of healthy eating. First, it’s the “I’m only eating salads” phase. Then I’ll get to the “I’ve eaten salads for half a day straight – I should treat myself to a hamburger” phase. Finally, I get to the last phase, which I’m in right now, the “I don’t give a phase.” If you are like me, when you enter this last phase, you begin to justify things. Then all your food choices quickly become an endless stream of irrational rationalizations. “Well, I’ll allow myself to eat that because I had a salad a month ago. Well, I’ve earned that because I took out the garbage. Well, I’m starting my starvation diet tomorrow, so I really should have five hamburgers.”

Organic is probably the biggest scam of the century. For those of you unfamiliar with it, organic is a grocery term for “more expensive.” There are people who eat only organic food, and then there are people who don’t have tons of money to waste.

Supposedly, there are good fats and bad fats. I like to think of myself as a good fat. It helps my self-esteem when I look in the mirror.

Can we just settle down with the farmers’ market enthusiasm? Instead of going to a grocery store and getting everything I need, I can stand outside and buy some dirty vegetables on the street from absolute strangers who supposedly live on a farm…

It’s hard to eat healthy. It’s too expensive: Should I have this salad for twelve bucks or these five hamburgers for a dime?

On Fruit:
(Chapter titled “Nobody Really Likes Fruit” followed by “Even Fewer People Like Vegetables. lol)

Even when people seem excited to see fruit, they are really just relieved it’s not vegetables.

Once a friend excitedly asked me, “Why don’t we go apple picking?” Because I’d rather die. You have to pay to pick apples? “Okay, how  much do I owe you to work for you for free? Don’t rip me off. I’m no dummy.”

If honeydew melons disappeared from the planet, would anyone even notice?

At some point during the turn of the last century, it became acceptable for people to send cut fruit arranged like flowers. I’d like this to stop.

On Vegetables:
Think back to the last time you ate a vegetable. Did you WANT to eat the vegetable? Congrats on that healthy choice, but don’t confuse a healthy choice with a desire to eat a vegetable. I mean, I don’t want to be fat, but I want vegetables less.

Parents dishonestly announce how good vegetables are in front of young children, hoping that because of the youngsters’ absence of life experience and sheer stupidity, they will be tricked into liking them.

It’s staggering, the exertion that is put into making vegetables appealing. At their best, vegetables are the sidekicks. The opening band you didn’t come to see at the concert. The asparagus next to the steak. The expectation is that the entrée is so good you won’t notice that you are eating mutant blades of grass.

Probably what makes cooked bell peppers so special is that they can ruin the taste of any dish they are in. Green, red, yellow, or orange peppers—you can change the color, but when I see one, I prepare for disappointment.

On vegetable trays:
Occasionally, raw, naked, unenhanced vegetables are shamelessly presented as if they are actually desirable. A tray of vegetables at a party almost makes me sad. The only thing that raw vegetables have ever been good for is the careers of hummus and ranch dressing… “Who is throwing this party? A nutritionist? Peter Rabbit? Is this a party or a Weight Watchers meeting?” You know they are just there for decoration. Who doesn’t want to look at pretty colors while scarfing down pigs in a blanket.

On eating salad:
To me, salad eaters never seemed happy. It’s a well-known fact that it’s impossible to have a good time when a salad is placed in front of you. Why would someone voluntarily eat lettuce? Possibly the most impressive thing about a salad is that you can eat tons and tons of it and never be satisfied. After I’ve eaten a salad, I always feel like I’ve earned something, like a meal, or at least maybe I’ve raised money to fight cancer. “I will finish this salad if you sponsor me for five dollars a leaf.” A salad for me takes so much effort. That’s why on the rare occasion I’ve had a salad as an entrée, I feel less like I’ve made a healthy choice and more that I’m being punished. Without a heavy dose of salad dressing, I feel like I’m eating a bag of yard work.

I have eaten salads. Whenever I get a steak, I always order a salad, thinking that will somehow balance it out. “Twenty pounds of meat, two leaves of lettuce. That should cover it.”

A salad bar just doesn’t make sense to me. There is virtually no difference between the germ levels of a salad bar and a kiddie pool. And why would someone want to make his or her own salad? To make matters more confusing, the salad bar usually only has small plates. “All-you-can-eat salad…off this drink coaster.”

My favorite type of salad has to be the taco salad… taco salad makes no effort to live up to the healthy perception of a salad. An edible, deep-fried bowl to hold a “salad” that is mostly cheese and meat.

Random funny-and-true one-liners:
Granola is considered healthy, and we know this mostly because it tastes like gravel.

Chopsticks are fun, but I’d rather eat than play Operation.

Nostalgia is the only thing keeping Peeps in circulation.

To me, ducks are a little too adorable to eat.

A cheeseburger a day keeps the feelings away.

Some people make fun of White Castle, and these people are called everyone.

In Wisconsin, they have deep-fried cheese curds, which taste like French fries and heaven had a baby.

The food served on Super Bowl Sunday is all handheld and makes the Thanksgiving meal look like a health shake.

I think we can all agree turkey bacon was a valiant but failed experiment. Some believe 70 percent of all disappointment we feel in life is from turkey bacon.

While many of us associate hot dogs only with happy times, there are the party poopers who get all caught up in the facts. Hot dogs are like strippers, really. Nobody wants to know the backstory.

I’ve come to the conclusion that hot dogs could be made up of just about anything and I’d still eat them. Well, anything but kale. I have some boundaries.

I don’t follow the logic sometimes presented to me: “Hey, you love food, so you must enjoy cooking.” I also enjoy sleeping, but that doesn’t mean I like making a bed.

I love going to the grocery store. For me it’s like going to an art museum of food I’ve eaten. Ah, the work of Frito-Lay... What a lovely exhibit.

On cheese:
When I’m lying in bed thinking about cheese, which is usually every night, I’m typically thinking about Cheddar cheese. When I say Cheddar, I’m talking about sharp Cheddar. I don’t understand why “mild” Cheddar even exists. It’s like the nonalcoholic beer of Cheddar.

On eating outside:
I know people love an outdoor barbecue, but to me it just means “Let’s make the food more accessible to insects.” I mean, I enjoy the wind blowing a plate of potato salad onto my shirt as much as the next guy… but eating, cooking, or even being outdoors just feels counterintuitive to me. There’s just too much standing.

On fast food:
I truly enjoy the societal outrage directed at McDonald’s: “McDonald’s food has no nutritional value! There are no vitamins!” I always imagine McDonald’s’ confused reaction to be “Um, excuse me? We sell burgers and fries. We never said we were a farmers’ market. Heck, our spokesman is a pedophile clown from the ‘70s. What do you want from us, America?”

Wendy’s Frosties, like the White Witch in Narnia, are dangerous. They are too thick to be a shake and served in a cup so that we can deny we are eating six scoops of melted ice cream.

It seems Taco Bell will do just about anything to get people into their restaurant, or more specifically, their room with a microwave in it. None of the food is cooked at Taco Bell. It’s reheated and assembled on-site. Taco Bell is fundamentally one step up from an office break room. For a while, there was a commercial actually promoting the “Taco Bell Diet,” which I’m pretty sure was constructed on the belief that once you eat Taco Bell, you won’t want to eat again. If you are going to Taco Bell for your diet, you have a bigger problem than your weight.

Arby’s is like the cousin of the other fast-food places, but it’s that weird cousin you never see, and when you do, you always think, Oh yeah, you exist.

When Sbarro recently announced that it was filing for sbankruptcy, I was sbad. I wasn’t sburprised, given that Sbarro is a pizza chain that doesn’t deliver pizza. That doesn’t seem sbmart.

On ketchup:
There really isn’t any condiment competition for ketchup. Mustard, the closest competition, is the Mets to ketchup’s Yankees. Mustard has its fans, but there really is no comparison.

What is with the single-serve size of those ketchup packets? I’m not saying I need a gallon of ketchup, but maybe enough for more than one fry. Tearing open twenty packets with my teeth, I end up looking like a heroin addict. Most often, fast-food places give you two or three packets, and if you go back up to ask for more, they make you feel like you are trying to score drugs.

Sometimes the packets will have printed on them “Not for resale.” I didn’t know this was an issue… were people looking at ketchup packets and thinking, eBay, here I come. Ca-ching! If you are in a position where you have to sell ketchup packets, I don’t know if anything written on the packet is going to hold you back.

On cake:
Cake is how life is celebrated. Birthdays, weddings, and retirements are honored with cake… Cake is a social food. It must be eaten with someone else or in a group. There is something profoundly sad about eating cake while you are all alone. Believe me, I do it all the time.

A helpful visual aid:

Chapter title: Breakfast: A Reason to Get Out of Bed

Every table in IHOP is equipped with its own caddy filled with an assortment of syrups. Each of the syrup containers is personally licked by a similar assortment of five-year-olds.

If you’ve never had the chance to visit a Waffle House, simply imagine a gas station bathroom that serves waffles. That sums up the atmosphere pretty well.

A heartfelt closing:

My advice to you, dear reader, is to eat well and eat frequently. Our time here is pretty short. It’s filled with disappointments and drama, and food can make it better… it’s important that you enjoy your life. That’s why a decent cheeseburger is always a good decision… I hope your worst eating experiences are behind you. May you enjoy only great meals, mostly with family and close friends. I hope your coffee is strong, your cheese is sharp, and your guacamole is chunky.

Motivational Monday! :)

The Sweetheart Run 5k is exactly two weeks from yesterday (on Valentine's morning). So I'm starting the C25K 8-week app, and planning to run with the Runner's World beginners group as often as I can! An added side benefit of training for something is that I naturally want to make healthier food choices. So get excited! I know the new year is still a couple weeks away, but why wait? Today is a new beginning with a clean slate!!

Hearing this quote in the movie made me remember how much I loved it in the book. It's true on so many levels, especially with emotions and sin struggles!!

A happy collage to remind myself that:
A) My size 10-12 goal is not the impossible dream!!
B) It may take a while to reach my overall goal, but looking and feeling much better is not that far away!
C) I looked better than I realized at the time all these pics were taken - so I want to appreciate and enjoy it more when I get there again!!
D) Yes, please to runners jackets, long-sleeved t-shirts, turtlenecks, and dark jeans!! :)

Sooooo true for me... the work would be worth it for the emotional benefits alone!

True story... wish me luck as I start training again!

12-12 Photo Friday!

Just FYI, tomorrow = 12-13-14, which is the last "sequential date" for the next 20 years (until 1-2-34)! I feel like I should do something fun to celebrate it!! lol We'll see. :)
(It was the last of the super cutesy dates that I'd imagined myself getting married, but there's always 7-7 or 7-17 of whatever year I might eventually get engaged.)

And today is 12-12, which is also fun. Here's a photo Friday collage from the 12-12-12 Lifegroup Christmas Party hosted by Mindi and I two years ago today!! =)

Also, here's a fun "day of the dozens" coupon for anyone craving Krispy Kreme today... plain glazed is kinda boring to me, but some might feel differently! :)
There has been a sad, sad drought in Hollywood lately - no movies worth seeing for the last several weekends, and still, I'm not very excited about anything this weekend either. Perhaps that's a good thing, as tonight = my last night of homework for a month!!! Which is fabulous and exciting! And another reason to celebrate tomorrow. =)

Thankful Thursday ;) (68)

Happy Thursday, friends and fam!!

Today, I am thankful for God's compassion, and that He is "the God of all comfort." What a fantastic phrase that is to describe Him, and so true. That and "the God of hope" are my favorites. :) Hmm, and "Wonderful Counselor." lol  I guess they're all amazing qualities when you need them most!

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ."
~2 Cor. 1:3-5

I've been so tenderhearted the last couple weeks, feeling right on the verge of tears and crying a few times through each day. But I feel like my joy is rising back to the surface the last couple days, and that feels awesome and refreshing!

I am also very thankful today for the two Kristins in my life - lol - for my cousin, Kristin, and my long-time friend, K-Foster... both of whom have helped me to feel understood (really big for me) and strengthened lately! The words can be the same, but there's a huge difference in people who say kind things out of superior pity or in an attempt to 'fix me' and people who say them because they genuinely believe I have more inner strength and value than I sometimes realize, and the Kristins both fall in the second category! :) (As do many of my other friends - they just happen to be the most recent examples in my mind.)  And for that, I am thankful!!

Jon and Kristin had me over for dinner on Tuesday, and by the time I left, I felt like a different and much stronger person than when I arrived. It's sooo good to surround myself with people who really see my heart and know my strengths and build me up, speaking words that sow seeds of life that are straight from God!! I am thankful for it, and I want to be that type of person for others as well! We need God's Word and Christian friends to remind us who we are, that our lives have great value and we are FAR MORE than the mess Satan tries to convince us we are when we're struggling!!

Finally, I'm thankful that Kristin shared this verse with me and encouraged me to keep walking in integrity and to seriously pray for God to act as a shield in my life, guarding my heart and my close relationships from the attacks of the enemy who wants to steal, kill, and destroy everything that I hold dear. So I am absolutely praying for that and believing God for healthy relationships!

Super random ending, but I just love Jim and Pam!!  The Office went downhill at a staggering pace, so I missed this episode when it originally aired, but I really love this part. Despite the poor video quality :( it's hard to watch without tearing up. Or maybe that's just the lingering tenderheartedness? It's absolutely the best hug ever - I love it. Yay, fighting for love in marriage!!!

The End of an Era

Dear Malori Riah,

I still remember.

I vividly remember the day we met in 2007 at your surprise birthday party in Cassie's boss' creepy house.  I remember staying inside with a group of law students I didn't know at all... and thinking you were hilarious, definitely the life of that party!  I remember the first time we hung out just the two of us, skipping the boring group concert at the last minute and going to see the depressing mess that was The Other Boleyn Girl instead.  I remember seeing a string of bad movies together after that, always laughing about them and having fun hanging out.  I remember calling you early on in the friendship and feeling relieved and thankful that our conversations always flowed so naturally and comfortably.  I haven't found that in another friendship before or since.  I had just been through the loss of several core friendships earlier that year, and you were the first person who truly made me feel seen and heard and appreciated, like I wasn't alone and what I was going through really mattered.  You had lost your only brother earlier the same year, and I think we bonded quickly and both unknowingly helped each other make it through all the brokenness and pain and grief we were wading through.  It meant a great deal to me.

I remember introducing you to Captivating and the many conversations we had about God, spiritual warfare, and knowing our worth in Christ after you read it.  I remember visiting you at "The Shack" in OKC and laughing about the crazy cat lady and her kiddie pool.  I remember slowly figuring out that we mostly liked and disliked the same people, and getting cracked up about that more than once.  I remember going to your Oscars party and winning the trivia, and you laughing about my Julia-Roberts-style victory fist pump.  I remember Natalie Gruenberg suggesting me as a possible roommate for you because they were remodeling your law school apartment, and I remember thinking that would probably be awesome and fun.  (And it was!)

I remember the first time you called me your "best friend," standing in the hallway between our rooms after one of many late roommate talks over milk-and-oreos.  I remember breathing an inward sigh of relief, feeling so grateful that you were there to fill the friendship void so many others had left in my life two years before.  I remember talking about anything and everything with you, going to multiple lifegroups together every week, and spending most of our downtime together in 2009.  I remember you cheering me on in my first half-marathon, then training and running a half (and several shorter races) with me in 2010, encouraging me when I was nervous about leading our lifegroup, cheering me up when I was upset about family stuff, and being firmly on my side when there was petty drama with any mutual friends.  You were in my corner, always, and knowing that meant the world to me.

I remember checking the website several times then leaving you a congratulatory voicemail that was how you first learned you'd passed the Bar Exam!  I remember being there with you and your family for your law school graduation day, laughing about the cheesy bagpipes with Megan, taking pictures and being so excited for you!  I remember when you received two job offers at once, and the day you officially accepted your great job with Chesapeake.  I remember several conversations about your work as a landman and stories about your crazy bosses and coworkers... as well as several conversations about my future career and what that might be and how I might get there.  I knew that you really believed in me, and that's a huge part of why I finally had the courage to go back to school and try to start fresh with something that felt more purposeful to me...  so thank you for that.

I remember learning about the four main personality types at a court reporting seminar and then discussing all of that at length with you, figuring out how they all work together and the complimentary strengths and weaknesses of each type.  I loved that you found it all as fascinating as I did.  I distinctly remember that you were the first person I called when I learned that my Mom had cancer, when my parents were in a huge car wreck, and when I learned that baby Anthony died.  You were fantastic and supportive in crisis situations, and knowing you were there for me would calm me down even before we would talk.  I remember you calling me when things were crazy with your nephews or you were upset over work stuff, and us talking/ crying/ venting our way through that together, too.  I also remember my heart sinking when Megan texted me that you had been in a car wreck (but thankfully, you were okay).

I remember rallying the lifegroup guys to help you move from your law school apartment into my house in 2009.  I remember staying with you at your Crown Martin apartment in OKC, admiring your unique sense of style right down to how you had decorated your fireplace mantel.  I remember your impressive and alphabetized DVD collection, and you gifting me the cabinet that still holds my DVDs today.  I remember going with you to OKC on the day you bought the very first house you looked at, which is absolutely perfect for you!  I remember the group road trip to help paint and do your garage floors, our furniture shopping excursion when the salesman was impressed with your decisive spirit (and you bought the Brady Bunch couch), helping you unpack the crizazy amount of dishes in your kitchen, and the fun afternoon when we randomly redid your "tennis bathroom" together!

I remember our movie marathons (in theaters and in each of our homes), countless meals together, belting out songs on car rides, talking till 2 or 3am several times, backing each other up on our epic rants, the phone calls and funny emails and inside jokes, rehashing Grey's and Friends and BBT and Downton, the Halloween party you threw just to get me out of going to Bart's boring party, you helping our family paint Jaceman's nursery room (and being clever enough to figure out how to paint the argyle wall), our last dinner at MiMi's the night baby Kyndal was born, the fun bonfire night with the lifegroup, the fantastic and relaxing trip to Big Cedar with Ruth and Charlotte, working on our book ideas and being each other's first readers, our NYC trip with Chet Lee at Christmastime, sooo many funny and quotable memories through the VCGO Vegas trip, then you joining me in Las Vegas once again for Bill and Jill's wedding (where we both bought fun Coach purses)!!  I remember the Carrie Underwood and Elton John and One Republic concerts, and laughing inappropriately when I realized you and Chet were both deeply moved by the opening scene of Lion King on Broadway. lol  Truly, there are a thousand fun events and memories to choose from, and they've been flooding through my mind lately and washing away the painful bitterness I've felt toward you...

Because I remember the hard stuff, too.

A conversation in the Bravo parking lot that was especially difficult, after which, I took your advice and saw a psychiatrist to get on antidepressants.  I also remember a heated fight in January 2013 that left me stunned and reeling to process your anger.  I remember the distance gradually creeping in as you made new friends in OKC, some sharp words and last-minute plans shifting and feeling like you were suddenly sick of me and finding that idea terrifying.  I remember trying way too hard to reestablish a connection, constantly feeling like I was not enough (or too much - or both).  And it all made me sadder and more anxious, which made you more dismissive and disengaged... and it became a negative cycle neither of us knew how to fix.

I remember you saying a while back that I was "more like family to you" than a friend, and I LOVED that thought and felt the same way.  I remember you assuring me several times that relational conflict is normal and doesn't mean a relationship is ending.  Then I remember your stance on all of that drastically and suddenly changing in August 2013 for reasons I still do not clearly understand.  I remember reading your email that Monday night, taking a deep breath, and knowing that my life had changed forever.  It was happening again.  I remember being in a state of shock as I un-tagged you in hundreds of Facebook pictures then deleted you from my friends list, and it all felt like a surreal repeating nightmare.  I remember being angry and eventually (seven months down the road) writing several things I regret and have apologized for but cannot truly take back.  I remember a few back-and-forth emails and texts, me continually trying to salvage our friendship but eventually being rejected over and over.  And over.

I remember (and still often feel) the rampant confusion, sadness, humiliation, anger, and the aching sense of loss in my heart that may never completely go away.  I sincerely miss having a BEST friend who was more like a sister to me - I miss you being on my side - I miss having a place where I truly felt that I belonged - I miss a million little things that made you so uniquely special to me.  But at this point, I have cried because of you more than I've cried with you, and I have to move on and release the false hope that you still care about me.

I doubt you will ever actually read this, but I've decided to write it anyway, just for myself, in a last real effort to truly let alllll of this go.  Based on my past history with rejection, my current depression, and how very much this best friendship meant to me, your choice to end this via email hurt me far more deeply than you probably intended.  It is only by God's grace that I can recover from the damage this severing has caused.  I still think of you often and I miss knowing what's happening in your life.  I really hate that we never got to talk about Megan's wedding and that you never got to meet precious Kyndal Faith.  I still feel lost sometimes in big decisions without being able to talk with you about them - you spoke with such authority and confidence, and I miss that (although I can see it was a false sense of security for me).  Sadly, I also remember some critical comments, and it's time for me to really let all of that go.

This is the last picture I have of the two of us, captioned "Me and the BFF" on Facebook, celebrating your 30th birthday in 2013.  I knew it was a big day and did my best to help make it special for you!  (You were done with me before we got to celebrate mine.)

I am genuinely sorry for the times I was difficult to love and it was hard for you to be my friend, and I am sorry that you chose to give up on this completely.  It feels as if you've forgotten all the good things and chosen to remember only the bad, like you have pronounced a final verdict on what I am worth - labeling me irredeemable and unworthy of further effort.  From my perspective, it is tragic, and I still do not understand what caused your heart to harden so quickly and unyieldingly toward me.  You were not there for me at a time when I really needed you, and being there for someone when they need you is all relationships are about in the end.  You were my "person," and I have loved you very much.  Even now, I hate having to say goodbye to you, and I still irrationally worry some days that I'm not strong enough to make it through life without your support, love, and strength.  But God is still close, and He will be enough and has proven that He will keep rebuilding me and creating a stronger mosaic from all these broken fragments inside me.  He is good at providing the right people at just the right times to be there for me and help me back up when I am weak.

You were correct that conflict in close relationships is inevitable, which feels so scary for me because I obviously don’t have much relational experience in which conflicts are resolved well.  I desperately hoped this friendship would be that case -- but I've done all anyone could possibly do, yet you have remained silent and closed off.  I'm praying a lot lately and doing my best to lean in to God and learn to trust people again -- not in a clingy, desperate way, but with faith and grace, trusting God that He will use us to bless and refine each other.  I've had to forgive you over and over.  And more recently, I've had to fully forgive myself because it's so easy to blame myself and my not-being-fun-enough in the midst of overcoming depression for your decision to leave...

But in the end, this was your decision from start to finish.
And I didn't deserve it.
And I never would have treated you this way.

Christmas is almost here, and I've been reminded recently of all I've lost.  After wrestling with a lot of heavy guilt that I mistakenly believed was from God, I am slowly embracing the truth that letting go of this (what I had hoped and fully believed would be a lifelong best friendship) is not a stain on my character, nor a huge disappointment or failure to God, but rather an important part of His plan for my future.  It's extremely hard for me, but I know that I need to let you go and release this.

This advent season is all about remembering Christ’s birth and anticipating His second coming, celebrating our hope through Him even as we hurt and struggle and wait for the world to eventually be set right.  Satan has been nipping at my heels lately with fear and bitterness and self-doubt, but I'm fighting not to let it overcome me... to fully embrace this new season and next chapter of my life!  I'm still here, and I am going to be okay.  2015 will be about forgetting what lies behind and pressing forward with Christ.  But today is about remembering and saying goodbye to you and to the hope of any future friendship here.  I am deeply thankful for what you have meant to me and for all the good things your friendship brought into my life.  There are many more than what I have listed out here.  But I'm officially joining you in saying goodbye, albeit a year a three months late.  I'm praying God will help me to break the soul ties I've held on to so tightly, freeing me to let go of someone who let go of me a long time ago.  It's time... "The end of an era, you might say."  I will respect your decision and completely drop the hope of reconnecting, doing my best to forgive and to forget, to the degree that God allows that.  I wish you the very best in life, and I will still look forward to being your friend again in heaven, where our hearts will be fully known and healed, and where every dark place and dividing wall between us will forever fade away in the light of Christ's love!  ❤

With Love,
Lindsey Claire
Monica:  It's a big change.  The end of an era, you might say.
Rachel:  ...I gotta say, you know, I don't think six years counts as an era.
MonicaAn era is defined as: "a significant period of time."
It was significant to ME; maybe it wasn't significant to you!?
Rachel:  ...What's the matter with you?
Monica:  What is the matter with YOU!? lol

Photo Friday!

A few of my favorite recent pics:

Miss K-Faith just being a tiny little presh! Love her and her smile and her hair and her Thanksgiving outfit!!

Delivering the new mattress and box springs to the Myers as an early Christmas present! #gotothemattresses

Laura and Chettles getting excited for Laura's b-day party!
(Chet has a friend who does posters and had this made for a "pin the shells & cheese in Laura's mouth" game!)

Team pic of the "Laura Lovers!" (I had a bad sore throat/cold and double pink eye, so judging by that standard, this is actually a good pic of me.)

Evan and Bellsy! lol
(He did No-Shave November then shaved all but the 'stache just for that day, so yeah, looking a bit creepy - Bellsy looks scared! lol  He did win the contest at work, though, so yay for that!!)

The Wilsons and Lauralai in front of my happy painting - turned out really cute!

Channing and Laura

This is one of my favorites! lol I asked them to bend down so I could see the birthday banner, and the cheesiness of it all just makes me laugh!!

And finally, a not-so-recent pic. Kristin Lamb (Foster) and I at Chris Cullins' Waffle Night party for Changie's lifegroup way back on June 4, 2007!! I realized recently that she's the longest close friendship I've ever had (7+ years) and the only close friend who knew me before the Josh saga. And I'm so thankful for her wisdom and influence and kindness and encouragement and friendship in my life!!! =)
That's all, folks. Happy Friday!!

"Hi, Chet!" and other fun videos! :)

Starting with a pic just so this video-filled post will have a picture.
Fried food fun at the Tulsa State Fair!

And now, some cell phone videos:

Also at the fair, the strangest petting zoo I've ever been to with zero barrier between any of the people and the animals... could've used more supervision, as several kids were trying to pick up baby goats and some of the deer were getting a bit grabby (see video) but it was pretty cool!! :)

The alpaca's expression at the end just makes me happy!! :)

Jaceman misses Chettles! :)

Chompin' on his ice, ready to go see Chet and Karli!

We told him to say "Hi Chet! Come see us!"
And he somehow changed it to, "Hiiiiii, Chet! I need a hug! Come -- with us!" lol :)

Singing Happy Birthday to Kelly Marie at JEM's house (featuring his Michael Scott harmonizing skills)!

"Wobble, Baby, Wobble, Baby..." lol
Ahh, the Caravan!

Precious Missy K getting so excited because she's "hiding!" :)

The girlfranz having a blast running around my table. lol I just love them!!

And finally, a Matt Chandler video, just because he's awesome.
