Gathering Place (Photo Friday)

Oh, I love the imagination of kids, so this was delightful and funny to me.  Jace got on this boat and played with the steering wheel and a couple other things for a minute, then quickly climbed to the front and struck a commanding pose...

If your mind doesn't immediately go to this moment... well, then you probably didn't see Titanic 15 times in theaters. lolol  It's definitely a classic movie moment that captures his playfulness and the innate desire to lead and be great... well done, James Cameron and Leo!

I also thought of this "Booze Cruise" moment, of course! LOL

Anyway, it made me smile that this was his natural instinct with zero direction from me and having never seen that movie.  If I knew how to photoshop things, I'd change the sand and rocks to water in the background and frame this for him!

Jumping back a bit, the fam came to visit me in Tulsa on Tuesday.  They picked me up around 11:30, then the Wilson fam joined us for lunch at The Brook South!  (Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of us all together, but Jace had fun playing with Tate and Parker, and Kyndal Faith had fun coloring this lovely cupcake.)

We drove from there to the Gathering Place... where I definitely underestimated the Spring Break crowd!  It took us forever to get there with all the traffic, then took Dad forever to find a parking space!  He dropped us off, so Mom waited in the Lodge whilst me and the kids went out to explore the crazy crowded park!

Spring Break at The Gathering Place... would not recommend! lol

They had fun, though, and I was happy to hang out with them!

❤❤

It was fun to watch them climb and slide and find fun things to do!  The zipline and the cool hammock swings all had a long line that they were too impatient to wait for, so we really need them to come sometime this summer when there's not a capacity crowd!

Photo op with random stilts guy while we crossed the bridge to try and meet up with Grandpa (after he finally found parking)!

They both loved this slide!

I took slo-motion videos of them on it, and it was fun to watch their expressions!

This is a bit odd and creepy, if you asked me.  They have these giant purple hands that move around during the concerts at night.  Granted, I haven't seen them in action, but the whole concept seems strange.

Just climbing out of the blowhole of this giant whale! lol

A road trip pic... J&K forcing themselves to get close to each other and smile after loads of petty arguing and pushing each other away. #siblingrivalry

And we ended our day with a trip to Sugar Llamas, where only me and Mom and T-man ate the amazing mini donuts!  Kyndal was grossed out by them being crunchy, and Jace just looked at them and quickly decided he was unwilling to try them. #lamesauce ...J&K both got the Tutti Fruitti ice cream, something that appealed to them because of the bright colors, but it was a pretty awful bubblegum flavor.  And Dad put gas in the car while we all ate on the patio outside... this is not a car-friendly dessert! lol

A Saint Patrick's Day throwback from 2017 - they were racing and kept pushing each other out of the way! lol

And a fun Friday optical illusion for you... these circles never touch and there is not a spiral pattern.
See? lol

Anyway, that's all I've got for now, friends!  Happy Friday, and hope it's a fun weekend ahead!!

St. Patrick's Thankful Thursday (#141)

"You will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous,
so that through us your giving will produce thanksgiving to God."
~2 Corinthians 9:11

Happy St. Patrick's Day, friends and family!!*

Today, I am thankful for:

1.  Getting to hang out with the fam yesterday in Tulsa (more pics coming in a Photo Friday post tomorrow)!

2.  The power to build up, advocate for, or tear down myself and others with what I say... I want to think, speak, and write words of life and hope!!

3.  Moments of epic cuteness... I parked next to this pickup, and three little Yorkie dogs perked up to look at me through the window -- I rolled my window down and talked to them for a second, then two of them were camera-shy and ducked back down as I snapped a quick photo, but y'all can trust me that it was the very cutest!! lol

4.  The ability to change my thought patterns, habits, words, life, and future... and through that effort, to change the lives of others!!  Also, the ability to gradually heal and let go of broken things from my past.

5.  Sugary goodness at Sugar Llamas with the fam! lol  For reasons I can't explain, the Flintstone (vanilla + Fruity Pebbles) is officially my favorite of these four, even with all the fun chocolatey flavors (cookies n' creme, s'mores, and peanut butter cup)!

6.  Finally getting to watch the Harry Potter Reunion Special on HBO Max!!  And tearing up with joy and nostalgia multiple times, as you would likely expect!  So fantastic.

7.  Loyal friends.  This pic was after a celebration dinner at Redrock seven years ago.  And when I saw it, I immediately felt grateful that everyone in the photo is still an important part of my life!

8.  Audiobooks -- specifically Attached and then this parenting book that was recommended by my cousin, Ashley!  Filled with some great insights about building trust, respect, independence, collaboration, and kindness in our children!!
I am still moving toward adoption and motherhood!  Not certain yet about which path is best... but I'm trusting that God will make it clear to me at the right time.

*Don't forget to wear something green today!  And I hope you have a beauti-mous day ahead!! ❤

Update & Random Photos

Hey, friends, and happy Monday!  Yesterday was the spring-forward time change, and it made me happy to look outside and see the sun going down around 7:30 tonight.  What a lovely Spring Break week change after a winter that included lots of snow and sleet!

I've written less than usual this month, but my mind and heart have been in overdrive.  I've completed the house assessment and two-thirds of the required parenting classes to become a certified foster/adoption parent with DHS.  It's mostly focusing on becoming a trauma-informed parent who understands the neglect and abuse these children will have endured (or drug and alcohol exposure in utero for newborn babies) and how to support their unique needs and developmental delays and behaviors, and then partners with DHS in working to "bridge" them back with their biological families and to keep them connected to their siblings who are often placed in various different homes... so many thoughts and emotions I won't put here, but needless to say, it's sad and hard to think about all that, and it's a difficult role to step into knowing what I know of the system and of my own intense empathy.  And to be honest, my faith in abusive/neglectful people's ability to change is drastically lower than it once was after all I've seen in the court system, so it's hard on me for multiple reasons there.  But empathy for the parents' brokenness would probably kick in when there was a specific person in front of me.  Anyway, there will be unknowns and anxieties for any parent anywhere, and I am certain there will be regular calls and pressure from DHS coming soon, but I will not move forward and "open my home" until I feel peace from God about a specific child and situation.  My end goal is still adoption, and I'm kinda wondering if that mindset has to shift for me to be able to work with DHS.

*Also, I'd have to make this blog private and invitation-only at that point (if I commit to foster care).  Because we all know I'm not going to just stop taking photos.  So if it becomes a private blog in a couple months and you didn't get an email from me, please send me a text and let me know you'd like to be added to the list!

I've also applied with a private adoption agency in Florida that was recommended by a friend.  There are lots of pros and cons to each of these options, and I'm a little tired of thinking about them.  My house is now equipped with a fire extinguisher, fireplace guard, cute little hand-drawn fire evacuation plan, outlet covers, and child-locks.  I've been researching daycares, and thanks to Sarah, found a great one that's two minutes from the courthouse, but it seems DHS won't cover that one, so I need to figure out my game plan there.  I bought myself a car seat and stroller (yay, Amazon), and I'm looking at convertible baby beds and more.  All while processing and praying over some big questions and fears, giving myself "one thing at a time -- you are resilient" pep talks, listening to an audiobook that has changed my perspective on marriage, and wishing I wasn't doing all of this on my own.  I'm not in a place where writing more about it publicly would be helpful right now, but I'd greatly appreciate your prayers for wisdom, faith, joy, supportive community, and that God would open the right doors and close the wrong ones all around!!

Ha, I wrote that last sentence before writing so much of what's above it, so I guess I'm almost always at a place where writing is helpful for me.

Okay, moving on, here's a presh first grade pic of me - I loved that dress!

I was looking for a specific certificate of Babah's - didn't find that yet, but found some other gems, like this Elementary School certificate that Babah received on her birthday in 1950!

And this lovely and heartfelt postcard we sent them from our Spring Break 1996 (nope, 1995 - the postcard stamp corrected me) Disney World trip. lol  ...Mom (understandably) wanted outta there, I was happy about watching TV on the road trip and ready to show them our photos, and Rach talked about the fun rides, but was upset that Space Mountain jerked her. lolol  (Side note: No roller coaster was as jerk-y as the Wild Cat at Frontier City, but Rachael loved that one, if I remember correctly!)

Mom's uncle and Grandad's brother, Forrest Switzer!

Chet told me that Tate named this stuffed toy I got him "broccoli!"  That made me very happy! lol

My 9-hour Saturday parenting classes have been at the DoubleTree Hotel on Yale, so you know what that means!?  Yay! lol  If you've never tried one of their walnut-chocolate-chip cookies, you should remedy that!

I'll probably be getting my garage and outdoor trim repainted soon.  I'm pretty happy that Sherwin Williams offers this ColorSnap Visualizer where you can play with different colors... how much would I love a pink garage with burgundy trim!? lol  But I won't do that to my neighbors.  Even though the name "Insightful Rose" is such a perfect pinkish paint color name!

Mailing my profile books to the agency in Florida!

My happy new mouse pad, thanks to Shutterfly "freebies."

And finally, here's the Miss K and her friend, Hadley, on Dr. Seuss day at CHA!

So I guess that's most of the random pictures I've collected lately.

I feel better having written about all that, and I'm so looking forward to the fam coming to visit me in Tulsa tomorrow!!  Hope you have a fantastic week ahead! ❤

Attached Quotes

This book taught me a lot and gave me a good dose of hope for future relationships.  What stood out most for me was that I don't have to pull back, minimize, or downplay my need for emotional connection.  It's not wrong or needy or codependent for me to really seek a healthy partnership and closer friendship connections.  A good marriage to a secure and supportive person would actually raise my personal security level and strengthen me as I pursue my dreams and goals.  I am not doomed to either being relationally dissatisfied or being mistreated in my closest relationships, and there is not something inherently too much or "wrong" with me that has caused other relationships and close friendships to fail - that's the most important lesson for me to try to fully grasp here!  Partnerships between anxiously attached and avoidant people will always be more difficult because of our conflicting basic needs for intimacy vs. distance.  We typically end up bringing out the worst in each other.  And that wasn't my fault or hers.  (Repeat that last sentence ad nauseam until I believe it.)

Attachment theory explains a million little things and past relational situations I once had big questions about.  And in the end, it shows me that I need to grow in my ability to effectively communicate my own needs for closeness and/or support, to *quickly* recognize and step back from avoidant relationships, and to believe that there is hope of finding a securely-attached partner who genuinely loves and values me!!

Anyway, this audiobook was encouraging and hopeful for my anxiously-attached self, so I'm taking the time to re-listen to the bookmarked spots and document several quotes below:

“Basically, secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving; anxious people crave intimacy, are often preoccupied with their relationships, and tend to worry about their partner’s ability to love them back; avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.”

"Anxious: You love to be very close to your romantic partners and have the capacity for great intimacy. You often fear, however, that your partner does not wish to be as close as you would like him/her to be. Relationships tend to consume a large part of your emotional energy. You tend to be very sensitive to small fluctuations in your partner’s moods and actions, and although your senses are often accurate, you take your partner’s behaviors too personally. You experience a lot of negative emotions within the relationship and get easily upset. As a result, you tend to act out and say things you later regret. If the other person provides a lot of security and reassurance, however, you are able to shed much of your preoccupation and feel contented."

"Secure: Being warm and loving in a relationship comes naturally to you. You enjoy being intimate without becoming overly worried about your relationships. You take things in stride when it comes to romance and don’t get easily upset over relationship matters. You effectively communicate your needs and feelings to your partner and are strong at reading your partner’s emotional cues and responding to them. You share your successes and problems with your mate, and are able to be there for him or her in times of need."

"Avoidant: It is very important for you to maintain your independence and self-sufficiency and you often prefer autonomy to intimate relationships. Even though you do want to be close to others, you feel uncomfortable with too much closeness and tend to keep your partner at arm’s length. You don’t spend much time worrying about your romantic relationships or about being rejected. You tend not to open up to your partners and they often complain that you are emotionally distant. In relationships, you are often on high alert for any signs of control or impingement on your territory by your partner.”

“Also, people with different attachment styles tend to explain why they are still alone in a different manner: People who are anxious often feel that there is something wrong with them; secures will have a more realistic view of things, and avoidants attribute their single status to external circumstances...”

“It is very important that you be compassionate with yourself. The worse you feel about yourself, the more you'll want to go back to the false safety of the bad relationship you were in. Your attachment system gets activated more when you feel bad about yourself.”

“So not only do people with a secure attachment style fare better in relationships, they also create a buffering effect, somehow managing to raise their insecure partner’s relationship satisfaction and functioning to their own high level. This is a very important finding. It means that if you're with someone secure, they nurture you into a more secure stance.”

"Mismatched attachment styles can lead to a great deal of unhappiness... even for people who love each other greatly. If you are in such a relationship, don't feel guilty for feeling incomplete or unsatisfied. After all, your most basic needs often go unmet, and love alone isn't enough to make the relationship work.”

"We call this situation the Anxious-Avoidant Trap... once you're caught, it's hard to break free.  They are trapped in a cycle of exacerbating each other's insecurities. People with an anxious attachment style cope with threats to the relationship by activating their attachment system, trying to get close to their partner.  People who are avoidant have the opposite reaction.  They cope with threats by deactivating, taking measures to distance themselves from their partners and turn off their attachment system.  Thus, the closer the anxious tries to get, the more distant the avoidant acts."

“But make no mistake: The compromise is in no way mutual; it is in fact wholly one-sided.  With every clash, the anxious person loses more ground... Instead of engaging in endless conflict that results in nothing but frustration and disappointment, they have decided to change their expectations and reduce conflict to tolerable proportions...  But we advise you to think long and hard about whether you want to make so many concessions to be with this person. "

“You now live in suspense, anticipating that next small remark or gesture that will reassure you. After living like this for a while, you start to do something interesting. You start to equate the anxiety, the preoccupation, the obsession, and those ever-so-short bursts of joy with love. What you’re really doing is equating an activated attachment system with passion.”

“Chances are, if you are anxious, you will automatically interpret calmness in the relationship as a lack of attraction...  The trick is not to get hooked on the highs and lows and mistake an activated attachment system for passion or love. Don't let emotional unavailability turn you on."

"Acknowledge and accept your true relationship needs.  The key to finding a mate who can fulfill those needs is to first fully acknowledge your need for intimacy, availability, and security in a relationship—and to believe that they are legitimate. They aren’t good or bad, they are simply your needs. Don’t let people make you feel guilty for acting 'needy' or 'dependent.'”

“If you're anxious, when you start to feel something is bothering you in a relationship, you tend to quickly get flooded with negative emotions and think in extremes. Unlike your secure counterpart, you don't expect your partner to respond positively but anticipate the opposite. You perceive the relationship as something fragile and unstable that can collapse at any moment. These thoughts and assumptions make it hard for you to express your needs effectively.”

"If you are with an Avoidant partner, you are constantly being rejected and rebuffed.  After experiencing these distancing strategies for a while, you start to blame yourself.  You may believe that if your partner were with someone else, she or he would act differently.  That with another, she or he would surely want to be closer than with you.  You begin to feel unattractive and inadequate.  Understanding that your arguments actually have a hidden subtext to them, that they genuinely are irresolvable, changes your perception of your own role dramatically.  Once you understand that your partner will always find areas of contention as a way of maintaining distance, and that she or he will always need to withdraw no matter whom she or he is with, you will no longer blame yourself for the relationship problems."

"There is a major difference between couples who are dealing with non-attachment-related issues and those who are engaged in intimacy struggles.  While the first couples want to find a common ground and reach a resolution that will bring them closer together, the latter engage in ongoing irreconcilable fights, or one of the two is forced to compromise unilaterally in areas that are near and dear to him or her."

"Chances are that if you're getting the cold shoulder, if your partner is much nicer to strangers and usually pleads the fifth, choosing not to talk to you, you've become the enemy. Your only crime has been to become too close to someone who can't tolerate it.  This is in very sharp contrast to life in the inner circle with someone secure.  Your wellbeing comes second to none.  You are confided in first.  Your opinion matters most.  You feel admired and protected.  Your need for closeness is rewarded with even more closeness."

"Once you're convinced that you've become the enemy, why is it still so hard to walk away?  First, because it is very painful.  As painful as it is to be mistreated by your partner, severing an attachment bond is even more excruciating.  You may understand rationally that you should leave, but your emotional brain may not be ready to make that move... You will get overwhelmed by positive memories of the few good times you had together and forget the multitude of bad experiences...  An activated attachment system is immensely powerful.  When we break up with someone, our attachment system goes into overdrive and we can think of nothing but getting back together with our loved one.  Just being in the same room is enough to entirely relieve the anxiety in a way that no other single friend or family member can."

"Anxious people may take a very long time to get over a bad attachment, and they don't get to decide how long it will take.  Only when every single cell in their body is completely convinced that there is no chance that their partner will change or that they will ever reunite will they be able to deactivate and let go."

"We believe that every person deserves to experience the benefits of a secure bond.  When our partner acts as our secure base and emotional anchor, we derive strength and encouragement to go out into the world and make the most of ourselves.  He or she is there to help us become the best person we can be, as we are for them."

"There is no one for whom attachment theory has more to offer than men and women with an anxious attachment style. Although you suffer the consequences of a bad match and an activated attachment system more intensely, you also stand to gain the most from understanding how the attachment system works, which relationships have the capacity to make you happy, and which situations can make you a nervous wreck."

"Attachment principles teach us that most people are only as needy as their unmet needs.  When their emotional needs are met, and the earlier the better, they usually turn their attention outward.  The more effectively dependent people are on one another, the more independent and daring they become!"

"Don't lose sight of these facts: Your attachment needs are legitimate.  You shouldn't feel bad for depending on the person you are closest to.  It is part of your genetic makeup.  A relationship from an attachment perspective should make you feel more self-confident and give you peace of mind.  If it doesn't, this is a wakeup call.  And above all, remain true to your authentic self."

While I am Here…

"I am confident I will see the Lord's goodness
while I am here in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!"
~Psalm 27:13-14

I needed that verse this morning!  I’m going through the Psalms one chapter a day where I handwrite part of it with my Write the Word journals this year, and it’s been really uplifting and refreshing thus far!

Happy Tuesday, friends and fam!  Here are a few recent photos, starting with a Redrock dinner with the Wilsons and Fultons last Friday night!

In an ongoing group text that's mostly filled with memes, Chet sent us a pic of this happy Oreo dessert that Redrock is featuring this month, so that inspired our visit! lol  (The white on top is actually whipped cream, not ice cream... yum!!)

And one final group pic on our way out! ❤

Here’s Rach and the Mini Miss K with her second grade timeline!  Rachael came in to present that to their class and say lovely things about Kyndal Faith, then her teacher talks about the qualities she sees in her, as well! I love that they do that for each of the kids, and Rach did a great job with the creativity, as usual! =)

A fun Splash Mountain pic from our 1996 Disney trip!  Yay for Kristin finding this and texting it to me!!  I remember we stayed late and did that ride about 7 times in a row when there was no line for it that night… we were soaked, but having so much fun!!

Working on this.

An encouraging reminder!

This made me laugh and reminded me of a certain nephew! Lol

We may get more snow this week, and while I’m usually a winter fan, right now I’m kinda over it. Bring on the time change and longer sunny days and springtime color and summer swims!!

That's it for today. Hope you’re having a good week so far!

Thankful Thursday #140

"For you have been rooted in Him
and are being built up and strengthened in the faith,
just as you were taught,
while you continue to be thankful."
~Colossians 2:7

Today, I am thankful for:

1.  Penn and Kim Holderness winning The Amazing Race this season - YAAAAY, so thrilled for them!!  Love their podcast, love their book, love their videos, love who they are as individuals and how they relate to each other, and love this victory for them! ❤  I'll be watching the last episode tonight, but I'm pretty thrilled to already know how it ends. =)

Here is Penn's song-parody recap of their season... they started pre-COVID, were sent home for a long time, and then came back for the win.  For the record, I could never be on this show for so many reasons.  I'd probably be able to man up and do the bungee jump for a million dollars, but there is zeeeero shot that I would eat cheese crawling with maggots.  Kudos to them for perseverance, but that's a hard pass for me!

2.  Cody Rigsby, for making exercise fun with his XOXO rides and ridiculous life advice!

3.  This true and comforting meme, and feeling more peace all around lately.  My life is not off track or moving behind schedule.  God is with me and for me, and I need to stay focused on the path He has for me, not what anyone else is doing or what He has for them!!

4.  This verse, and the fact that even God doesn't expect us to understand why certain things are happening in our earthly lives... just to trust Him and know that eventually, we will see His plan and His heart clearly! ❤

5.  Funny memes (like this gem Rachael sent saying it reminded her of me). lol  I do not ❤ small talk.  And also, I can totally hear Zach Galifianakis saying this in his signature casually awkward delivery. lol

6.  Noom.  And this reminder, which is definitely good news for me when it comes to eating habits and getting healthier!!  Change is hard.  And the wrong thought patterns and habits are very ingrained.  But it's not impossible.  I'm hoping that Noom will be to my eating habits what Peloton has been for my exercise habits, slow and steady persistence and small changes that add up!! =)

7.  My DHS Parenting Class (for certification as a Foster/Adoptive parent in their system) that starts this weekend... I'm curious and excited to start that, and I'm praying that God opens the right doors for me, whether that's a direct adoption or a foster care situation or something else that hasn't occurred to me yet!

Happy Thursday, friends!  I hope you have a lovely weekend ahead. ❤
