Memory Monday & Weekend Update!

Here are a few pics from my 2007 Carnival Cruise to Progreso and Cozumel with Rach and Kate... fun times and lots of hilarious quotes on that trip!!

Celebrating Liz's bday in 2010!

And now, several pics from this past weekend:  Lindsay's baby shower (she and Talhia are both pregnant with their first babies and due in the next two months)... then Jessie and Tyson's wedding reception... then my nephew, Carter's baptism at MWC LifeChurch on Sunday!  It was a busy weekend, but all fun happy stuff!!

A closer pic of the Lifegroup girls - it turned out great with all the bright colors! :) #thankschet

Jaceman being a classy gent eating his french fries with a fork, after drowning them in ketchup. And Missy being a playful preshface then getting a napkin bib to keep her cute shirt clean! lol
(*Her shirt said: "Is it CUTE in here or is it just me?" and Jace's shirt said "Jesus saves, bro" in all caps! lol  Both made me laugh.)

Well, here's a fun story... remember how Jon and Kristin came to stay with me on Friday? I basically never lock my bedroom door, but figured I would that morning before I showered...  Mmhmm, definitely locked myself out of my own bedroom for the first time ever last night... then immediately called Rach for tips on how to pick the lock. lol  I tried the bobby pin method FOREVER, even practicing on the bathroom door to try to figure it out, but it never budged - I don't have Rach's street skillz. lol  I really thought I was going to have to sleep in my guest room, but my old college ID came to the rescue... I remembered Chandler trying that method when he wants to get into Monica's secret messy closet on Friends, so I wedged that card in there as best I could and bam, the door popped right open! #thankschnandlerbong

What a way to end the weekend.  So glad I didn't have to call a locksmith for that!! #awkward ;)
Happy Monday!  Make it a great week!! #JEM

Photo Friday!

Writing a quick Photo Friday post, just for fun!
(Jon and Kristin are on their way over to spend the night soon! #slumberparty lol Their AC is not working - sad day - which seems to be the trend this summer.  Our courtroom AC is not working properly now either. #lamesauce)

Anyway, here is preciously adorable Kyndal Faith.  I. LOVE. HER.  And I get that I'm probably biased since she's my niece, but I think even if she wasn't, she's such a CUTE kid, and so sweet!!  Those little pigtails just kill me!  She reminds me of the little girl on Monsters Inc. lol

I'm officially headed to Disney World and Universal Studios this October with Chet, Karli, JEM, Kyle, and hopefully Sarah Elizabeth -- get excited!!  (I opened the app on my phone to look into buying Park-Hopper tickets, and had to laugh when Jake and Mal were the first characters to pop up. #seriously?)

Jaceman and Rach at Cheddar's for Dad's bday lunch!

Still loving the strength theme!!

Big News:  I actually had people over (Laura and Tiffany) and made dinner my very own self!! lol  I made "KFC" a/k/a Kristin Foster Chicken, Velveeta shells & cheese, and parmesan roasted asparagus, plus a no-bake Oreo pie for dessert. #yummers (This is an accomplishment for me right now.)  Surprisingly enough, it all turned out great, and I felt proud of myself!  And determined to try new recipes and have people over more often!! =)

Just a random pic of our happy courthouse fountain and the new Centennial celebration benches.  I do really love the fountain, but the building needs so much work.  Sewer smells off and on mixed with random flooding and AC breakdowns... with all that I know about the building issues and lack of care in fixing them, you couldn't pay me to drink the "filtered" water here. lol

Yay - it's always exciting to see one of my paintings on the wall in someone else's home!!  This was in Talhia and Kevin's bedroom when I went to her shower last weekend. =)

And here's a pic of the Fosters (third row back) riding Splash Mountain on their Disney trip last month - so fun!  I'm pretty psyched to get to ride that again - and Space Mountain, which was closed when we went last time!
Anywho, they're almost here now, so Happy Friday, friends!
Enjoy your weekend!!

Words of Wisdom Wednesday ~ T-Swift Edition!

Yep, I'm going from Tozer to T-Swift... that happened.
And I love them both! :)

Seriously, I'm such a fan of Taylor... through every stage of her career. =)  I just find her heart and personality kind and fun and strong and relatable and endearing!!  She's quirky and silly and hopeful and imperfect and emotional and cheesy and fierce and generous and feminine and talented and real! Not to mention that every song she writes is fantastic -- not a "guilty pleasure," just a pleasure! lol  #swiftyforlife
“Silence speaks so much louder than screaming tantrums. Never give anyone an excuse to say that you're crazy... Guarding your heart and protecting your dignity are a little bit more important than clarifying the emotions of someone who's only texting you back three words. I've learned that from trying to figure out people who don't deserve to be figured out.”
Amen!  And we all learn as we grow up, and she's learned and changed a lot, but people rarely give her credit for it. I'm so thankful that people don't judge me based solely on who I was in 2007.  Or 2013, for that matter.  #shakeitoff

"As far as the need to rebel... I feel no need to burn down the house I built by hand. I can make additions to it; I can redecorate. But I built this. And I'm not going to sit there and say, 'Oh, I wish I hadn't had corkscrew-curly hair and worn cowboy boots and sundresses to awards shows when I was 17; I wish I hadn't gone through that fairy-tale phase where I just wanted to wear princess dresses to awards shows every single time.' Because I made those choices. I did that. It was part of me growing up. It wasn't some committee going, 'You know what Taylor needs to be this year?' And so with 1989, I feel like we gave the entire metaphorical house I built a complete renovation and it made me love the house even more—but still keeping the foundation of what I've always been."
This.  This is what makes her so different from Britney or Miley or the thousand other teen stars who went off the deep end.  She's fought for and made her own choices all along, and she genuinely likes who she has been every step of the way... which makes her a far better role model for young girls than the insecure morphers who cater to the crowd then eventually rebel to prove a point to themselves.

“All of a sudden we’re supposed to be unfazed and so cool that nothing really moves us to jump up and down like when we were five. I just reject that idea. I’m not bored at these cool things I get to do. I’m not bored by any of it, so why would I act like that?”
Yaaaaas. lol  I get so irritated by people judging her for dancing and having fun in the midst of uppity celebrities or for being excited about winning awards!  We don't all have jobs that we passionately enjoy, but she really does, and I'm glad for that! =)

“All you need to do to be my friend is like me.”
Hooray, me and T-Swift are friends! Lol  ;-) Just kidding, but I think that quote is so simple and true.
"I don’t want to be known as the Heartbreak Queen. I want to be known for having a beautiful life. And that doesn’t mean that everything has to be good all the time. There's beauty in the ups and downs."
Preach! lol  #truth

Okay, defending T-Swift time is over... but I do need more people to get on this page with me and think she's awesome. lol  Going to her concerts alone has been fun and all, and it's totally worth it, but it'd be even better with a fellow Swifty friend next time! ;-)

Song of the Week = The Lucky One
Happy Wednesday, gang!!

Top Ten TOZER Tribute Tuesday!

How's that for alliteration!?  ;-)

I bought this one based on the high recommendation of John Eldredge (who else?), and it's truly one of the best and most transformational (if that's a word) books I've ever read... soooo much underlining and starring and marking up different sections in my copy -- it's out of control!  The book is actually fairly short, but it took me a while to get through because it requires 100% focus as you read...  It is full of deep, convicting truth and often written in KJV-style language.  Tozer's heart was so genuine and fully devoted to exalting God -- and his words inspire that same level of passion and commitment in those who read them!!
It is ten chapters long, so I'm going to attempt to narrow it down and pick my favorite quote from each chapter for this post:
1.  "Right now we are in an age of religious complexity.  The simplicity which is in Christ is rarely found among us. In its stead are programs, methods, organizations, and a world of nervous activities which occupy time and attention but can never satisfy the longing of the heart. The shallowness of our inner experience, the hollowness of our worship, and that servile imitation of the world which marks our promotional methods all testify that we, in this day, know God only imperfectly, and the peace of God scarcely at all."

2. "Everything is safe which we commit to Him, and nothing is safe which is not so committed."

3.  "I am addressing the thirsting souls who are determined to follow God, and I know they will not turn back because the way leads temporarily through the blackened hills.  The urge of God within them will assure their continuing pursuit... the cross if rough and it is deadly, but it is effective."

4. "Open my eyes that I may see... Make heaven more real to me than any earthly thing has ever been. Amen"

5. "It will require a determined heart and more than a little courage to wrench ourselves loose from the grip of our times and return to Biblical ways. But it can be done."

6. "The Word of God is quick and powerful.  In the beginning, He spoke to nothing, and it became something. Chaos heard it and became order; darkness heard it and became light... The Word of God affects the hearts of all men as light in the soul... I think a new world will arise out of the religious mists when we approach our Bible with the idea that it is not only a book which was once spoken, but a book which is now speaking."

7.  "Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other?  ...One hundred worshipers meeting together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be were they to become 'unity' conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship. Social religion is perfected when private religion is purified."

8.  "The whole course of life is upset by failure to put God where He belongs. We exalt ourselves instead of God, and the curse follows."

9. "The meek man cares not at all who is greater than he, for he has long ago decided that the esteem of the world is not worth the effort... He knows well that the world will never see him as God sees him, and he has stopped caring. He rests perfectly content to allow God to place His own values."

10.  "It is not what a man does that determines whether his work is sacred or secular; it is why he does it. The motive is everything. Let a man sanctify the Lord God in his heart and he can thereafter do no common act. All he does is good and acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."

#6, 7, and 9 are my favorites here. =)
(It was hard to narrow because it's hard to find quotes that stand alone without a full explanation and background.  So I recommend reading the actual book - it's fantastic and will encourage you to press in and move forward with God!!)

Bird by Bird Quotables

The following = my favorite quotes by Anne Lamott in Bird by Bird, an entertaining and often brilliant book about the art of writing!  Whatever else I'm supposed to do in life, I know that writing is part of it... I'm a bit intimidated by the act of writing a book, but it's a challenge that's worth accepting.  Between reading this book and going through the AuthorLaunch course and slowly mapping out what I want to write about, I'm feeling more and more inspired to WRITE from the heart and to build my own "little lighthouse!" ;)

If you are writing the clearest, truest words you can find and doing the best you can to understand and communicate, this will shine on paper like its own little lighthouse. Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.

Writing is about learning to pay attention and communicate what is going on.  Writing involves seeing people suffer and finding some meaning therein.  Your job is to see people as they really are, and to do this, you have to know who you are in the most compassionate possible sense…  If you are a writer, or want to be a writer, this is how you spend your days – listening, observing, storing things away, making your isolation pay off… try to remember that to some extent, you’re just the typist. A good typist listens.
Loved this part. ;)

When we listened to our intuition when we were small and then told the grown-ups what we believed to be true, we were often either corrected, ridiculed, or punished… So you may have gotten into the habit of doubting the voice that was telling you quite clearly what was really going on.  It is essential that you get it back… You get your confidence and intuition back by trusting yourself, by being militantly on your own side… Take the attitude that what you are thinking and feeling is valuable stuff, and then be naïve enough to get it all down on paper.

You wouldn’t be a writer if reading hadn’t enriched your soul more than other pursuits… Think of how many times you have opened a book, read one line, and said, “Yes!”  And I want to give people that feeling, too, of connection, communion.

The books and poets being taught in my English and philosophy classes gave me the feeling for the first time in my life that there was hope, hope that I might find my place in a community… Some people wanted to get rich or famous, but my friends and I wanted to get real. We wanted to get deep.

Becoming a writer is about becoming conscious. When you’re conscious and writing from a place of insight and simplicity and real caring about the truth, you have the ability to throw the lights on for your reader. He or she will recognize his or her life in what you say, in the pictures you have painted, and this decreases the terrible sense of isolation that we have all had too much of… This business of becoming conscious, of being a writer, is ultimately about asking yourself… How alive am I willing to be?

Sometimes this human stuff is slimy and pathetic – jealousy especially so – but better to feel it and talk about it and walk through it than to spend a lifetime being silently poisoned…  Your anger and damage and grief are the way to the truth… You cannot write out of someone else’s big dark place; you can only write out of your own...  It’s wonderful to watch someone finally open that forbidden door… What gets exposed is not people’s baseness but their humanity.

Try to write in a directly emotional way instead of being too subtle or oblique. Don’t be afraid of your material or your past. Be afraid of wasting any more time obsessing about how you look and how people see you. Be afraid of not getting your writing done. If something inside you is real, we will probably find it interesting, and it will probably be universal.  So you must risk placing real emotion at the center of your work. Write straight into the emotional center of things. Write toward vulnerability. Don’t worry about appearing sentimental. Worry about being unavailable; worry about being absent or fraudulent. Risk being unliked. Tell the truth as you understand it. If you’re a writer, you have a moral obligation to do this. And it is a revolutionary act – truth is always subversive.

Life is like a recycling center where all the concerns and dramas of humankind get recycled back and forth across the universe. But what you have to offer is your own sensibility, maybe your own sense of humor or insider pathos or meaning. All of us can sing the same song, and there will still be four billion different renditions.

Unacknowledged truth saps your energy… I want people who write to crash or dive below the surface, where life is so cold and confusing and hard to see… We write to expose the unexposed. If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must.  Most human beings are dedicated to keeping that one door shut. But the writer’s job is to see what’s behind it, to see the bleak unspeakable stuff, and to turn the unspeakable into words… You can’t do this without discovering your own true voice, and you can’t find your true voice and peer behind the door and report honestly and clearly to us if your parents are reading over your shoulder. They are probably the ones who told you not to open that door in the first place… so you have to breathe or pray or do therapy to send them away. Write as if your parents are dead.

Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor… it will ruin your writing, blocking inventiveness and playfulness and life force… Perfectionism means that you try desperately not to leave so much mess to clean up… we need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here – and, by extension, what we’re supposed to be writing.

Publication is not going to change your life or solve your problems. Publication will not make you more confident or more beautiful, and it will probably not make you any richer. There will be a very long buildup to publication day, and then the festivities will usually be over rather quickly… Publication is not all that it is cracked up to be. But writing is. Writing has so much to give, so much to teach, so many surprises… The act of writing turns out to be its own reward.

“So why does our writing matter, again?” they ask.

Because of the spirit, I say. Because of the heart… It’s like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can’t stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship.

Life & Death

This post will mostly just be stream-of-consciousness writing.  I learned tonight that Ted, a friend from my old lifegroup, was killed in a motorcycle accident.  (I didn't know him very well, but he was outgoing and funny and kind, and I followed a video blog he made for a while about his weight loss journey, which I know takes courage.)  I got the text from Chet on my drive back from MWC tonight, and it shook me up (and made me put my phone down pretty quickly).  Even when you're not especially close, it's always jarring to hear of someone in the younger age range dying.  I'm very thankful that he was a Christian.

...Tomorrow is my Dad's birthday - I drove home today to celebrate that with the fam, and we had a great time - Happy Birthday, Dad!!

...Sadly, it also marks the one-year anniversary of Jenni Kufahl's death following a long battle with cancer. She was the daughter of a CHA coach and teacher and the wife of another beloved CHA coach, as well as the mother of 7 young children.  Keep their family in your prayers.

Today is 2 weeks and one day after baby Diesel's 1st birthday.  His older brother, Anthony, died only two weeks after his 1st birthday, so this is significant and likely a bittersweet emotional time for my cousin.

With all of the above, plus the Planned Parenthood videos and the LifeChurch sermon on About Time, I've had all kinds of deep thoughts lately about death and life and life being short and life after death!  After seeing a post from Sarah about how people avoid end-of-life discussions, I randomly printed and filled out an Advance Directive and shared it with my family last week.  To say the least, thinking or talking about death does not scare me.  I genuinely think about heaven a lot and look forward to it... reunification and restoration and freedom and wholeness and being fully alive and fully loved and known in all my relationships... truly, everything we enjoy here will be SO much better there!!

But I'm here now.  I am here NOW.  So are you if you're reading this.  And earthly life is short, and God wants to use us here to draw more people to know Him before they die!

I'm praying for more strength to be the woman God wants me to be - to fully step into what He has for me here and make a real difference for His kingdom!  Yes, there is grief and loss and sin and pain and heartache here on earth, but there are also seasons of amazing joy and community and healing and hope!  Life can be breathtakingly beautiful sometimes.  And all the good things we see here are only partial, like a little preview of what we'll get to experience in heaven... so I'm pretty excited about that! =)

Because heaven awaits us, for real.  Perfect love and joy are coming!  Keep pressing in and pressing forward with God... your heart matters so deeply to Him, and your obeying Him may matter eternally to many others.  Don't let the past define you, but redirect your thoughts to becoming the strong person God created you to be and making the most of your one extraordinary life here on earth!!  (Talking to myself.)

"March on, my soul; be STRONG! ...May all who love You be like the sun when it rises in its strength." ~Judges 5:21,31
