8 ~ Advice

A Piece of Advice You Have for Others... Anything at All:

I mentioned yesterday that I have struggled before with depression and anxiety.  In the past five years, I have met with four different counselors - some very short-lived, and only one of whom I really connected with.  I have been in a healthy place for a little over a year now, and I'm so thankful for it.  I have an awesome friends-and-family support network, and I am willing to reach out and seek help from them and/or people outside my circle when I believe it is needed (I've come a long way from initially feeling shame and guilt over seeking counseling).  Although my life may seem cushy and pain-free from the outside looking in, there have been seasons of reeeeal struggle and heartbreak.  So my first word of advice is to have grace for people wherever they are on their journey because you never know what they are facing or how past stuff is still affecting them.  We all have unique personalities, backgrounds, insecurities, and problems... and we all go through the same stuff differently!

Having said all that, what's ironic to me is that the most helpful epiphany/advice I've received did not come from any counselor, family member, book, or friend.  It came from this little online article (HEREabout Disney Pixar's Inside Out!  The summary of the advice is simply: Give yourself and others permission to have negative emotions and FEEL things, because trying to quickly disconnect from sadness/anger/etc. does far more harm than good!

The movie tells the story of an 11-year-old girl named Riley as her family moves to a new state.  Her mom is stressed out with the move and her dad is struggling to adjust to the pressures of his new job. They see their daughter as the bright spot in their lives, and Riley's mom tells her that they need her to be happy for the sake of the family...
"It’s a well-meaning gesture, spoken without malice and intended to help Riley be strong. Yet it is this conversation that sets off the trouble inside Riley’s head... Riley's problem is not that she is experiencing sadness as a result of the move; her real problem is that she is trying so hard NOT to experience sadness. Inside her head, Joy literally draws a circle around Sadness and tells her not to come out of it. That fateful decision cuts Riley off from the help that she needs, driving her into depression and isolation. In one of Pixar’s most poignant scenes, Joy ultimately lets Sadness have control, Riley’s tears finally flow, and she is able to find the emotional support that she needs."  ~Ken Roach
I saw the movie in theaters and thought it was well done, but I didn't have any sort of personal epiphany until I read the above paragraph.  Riley is adjusting to major changes in her friendships, classes, outside activities, and family dynamic... yet she feels pressure to act happy and help keep everyone else happy and peaceful.  I am very aware that that has been true for me sometimes... and that feeling guilty about feeling sadness throws everything out of balance.  I would try so hard to make everything seem okay before it really was, and it created a toxic internal pressure to project false joy.  In the end, it led to feeling disconnected from myself and everyone around me, which is the basic definition of depression.
"The world can see through our plastic smiles, and it's a recipe for an emotional breakdown if we never allow ourselves to feel difficult emotions for fear that we will be a disappointment to God."  ~K. Roach
So allowing yourself to feel every emotion is healthy -- NOT to wallow in self-pity or let the emotions take control of you, but to acknowledge it and really experience the emotion when you feel sad or angry or jealous or afraid... without the shame or worry that you will disappoint God or other people.  (It's the fastest road to genuine healing and joy, and what has kept me out of the counselor's office for over a year now).  God knows our hearts, and He wants "truth in our inmost being," so sometimes that means venting or crying out to Him in the midst of pain and heartache, like David did all through the Psalms!

To keep this in the Disney realm... there's a Princess Personality Chart that says Queen Elsa from Frozen shares my INFJ personality type.  That actually made a lot of sense to me, as her main struggle through that movie is wanting to look like she has it all together and hide what other people might see as flaws.  "Conceal, don't feel. Put on a show. Make one wrong move, and everyone will know."  It's only when she has the "Let it Go" song epiphany that everything changes for the better.  It's okay to be different, and it's okay not to be okay all the time, and thank God for that!!  Life is rough some days, mundane some days, and other days it's awesome and full of joy and goodness.  No emotion is permanent, but they are all VALID and worth acknowledging.  There are seasons and changes in life, and sometimes the struggle is very real.  When that's the case, give yourself permission to feel it and to grieve your losses however you need to.  The only way through a difficult, painful situation is THROUGH it, so don't fight it and hide from it and numb out and bottle up all your feelings.

I still have to work at this and push myself there sometimes. Especially when I'm feeling upset over something that would seem minor to others (like people innocently asking what's wrong with my squinty eye... which quickly triggers all my Bells Palsy insecurities and immediately makes me want to hide, check the mirror, cry, say mean things about myself, and find some magic makeup that will fix or hide everything). In situations like that where my sensitive nature and past insecurities flare up hard, I am always tempted to harshly tell myself to get over it and move on, that it doesn't really matter or that other people are going through real problems and it's selfish for me to worry about that.  That happened yesterday, and instead of imagining the worst about what others must say behind my back, beating myself up for being selfish enough to feeling upset by that, or bottling up all my emotions... I got quiet and I let myself cry for a few minutes and be angry and vent to Mom and really feel the full sucky-ness of it all.  And I recovered fairly quickly... I was able to pray through it and give others the benefit of the doubt, speak some truth in love to my own heart, and thank God that I can still smile today!  Then I moved on with my day and felt back to normal.  It's a much quicker and healthier solution than how I used to respond.

Anyway, staying connected to your heart and feeling rather than suppressing your negative emotions is healthy, so that is my random advice for today! ❤❤

7 ~ Fears

The Thing(s) You're Most Afraid Of:

I am definitely more afraid of bugs and hot things (curling irons, hot glue, ovens, etc.) than the average person! But those are not the things I'm most afraid of. It's the deeper stuff - losing the people I love most (through death or abandonment or betrayal), losing my ability to smile, being physically and/or emotionally harmed by a deliberate attack, being all alone in a health crisis or emotional breakdown, my support network falling through when I need them most, never accomplishing anything of true value, being too far away to get there when someone I love is hurt or dying, etc.

I am thankful that I don't spend a lot of time worrying about these things at this point in my life.  Parts of my life were so darkened by depression and anxiety, and I want to do all I can to keep hope in front of me and keep my soul healthy and avoid falling back into that. It's why I never watch scary movies and why I recently stopped watching crime shows and medical dramas - I'm paying more attention to how those things affect my soul, and trying to take care better care of it. I'm very aware of my spiritual enemy and always working to separate the light from the darkness, to recognize and reject his lies and focus in on God's truth!

Many of my fears listed above have happened to me at least once, and I have survived. God gives us the grace we need for the present moment every step of our lives. I know that nothing will separate me from God's love and presence, and that's a HUGE comfort to me at this stage. And I have the greatest hope to cling to, knowing that whatever goes wrong here, God will bring full restoration and healing in the coming kingdom!

6 ~ Admiration

The Top Three Qualities I Admire in People:

1. Resilience ~ There is a huge difference in people who project a strong persona and fight to be seen as tough and intimidating versus people who possess a hard-earned inner strength of spirit and the wisdom and grace that come along with it. I admire people who have been tested, who have known heartache and loss, who had every natural reason to give up but fought their way through the worst and darkest parts of life and came out stronger and wiser and closer to God. That is who I want to be around and who I want to be.

2. Kindness ~ This quality made the list both times. You are never too important to be kind to people, and it can make all the difference. I admire people who prioritize the small acts of service and genuine kindness, thoughtful people who go out of their way to be helpful and encouraging. I admire people who are kind to themselves and kind to others.
That is who I want to be around and who I want to be.

3. Purity of Heart ~ Reading Little Women strengthened this desire in me. I understand and love the fact that God cares more about our inner life and heart motives than our behavior and appearance. Substance matters far more than image to Him, and that is both refreshing and challenging. There are a lot of areas where I look the part and match up with modern society's current definition of a good Christian, but I'm not meeting the true standard set forth in God's Word.  It's a tall order to keep your heart pure and uncontaminated in our world today - in what you watch, listen to, think, say, and do. To keep your heart set apart for God and pursuing what really matters. I admire people who strive to be virtuous and pure, to confess and repent and live with a clean heart and conscience before God and others.
That is who I want to be around and who I want to be.

"Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you."  ~James 1:27

5 ~ Places I Remember

"There are places I remember all my life,
Though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better.
Some have gone, but some remain..."
~The Beatles ❤

Today is supposed to be my top five moments... since that's really hard to choose, I'm going with completely different ones from my last post, as I've already written about those (HERE).

1. Watching the fireworks over Niagara Falls, Bill & Jill's room, Embassy Suites, Canada... so many moments from this trip could make this list... the zipline, the helicopter ride, the fun patio dinner at My Cousin Vinny's, seeing Niagara up close, the Hornblower cruise!! I'm going with the fireworks because it was epic and intimate at the same time in a way that I love! Mom, Dad, and I came up to Bill & Jill's hotel room (which had an amazing view of the falls) and we all rehashed our favorite parts of the trip and just watched the colorful illuminated falls and the awesome fireworks show!  They turned all the lights off so we could see the outside better, and it's just a fun memory to me of sitting by Mom in a comfy chair in the dark, listening to Dad and Bill's commentary as Jill took a thousand pictures of the fireworks! =)
2. Holding the newborn Kyndal Faith and having a "choose life" revelation, Mom and Dad's kitchen table... I won't be able to do that one justice, but it was a big moment in my heart, not long after the end of the Malori friendship (feeling so much pain and fear and darkness), then sitting there holding and singing to my most favorite precious niece, with my nephews playing in the background and family all around, making a firm decision that I would not let myself go as dark or as low in my pain as I did after the Josh stuff. Life is precious, and the people you love are precious, even when some of them hurt you deeply. Soft, cuddly babies with big, innocent eyes remind us that there is so much goodness in this world. You feel protective and know that they should be kept pure and innocent and full of light as long as possible, and they make you think about the value of life. And my little newborn niece was not going to grow up without an aunt who loved and adored her!! ❤
3. July 4th of 1994 Debusk family reunion, our 9121 house... kind of random, but it was such a fun event that I still remember and think about! We were hosting the family get together for all Mom's relatives that summer. Mom and Rach and I went all out decorating our house in patriotic attire, then Rach and I swam and played on the swings and fort and sang songs with JoBug and ate Babah's red, white, and blue jello! Good ol' fashioned summer fun! =)
4. Bill & Jill's wedding reception, top of Stratosphere hotel, Vegas, 11-11-11... everything about this night was pretty perfect!  (I only left it off last time because Malori was there, but at the time, that was part of what made it fantastic for me.) I love Las Vegas, so that's a good start - and I was there with my parents, Bill and Jill and the Wallaces and Rick - lots of good family friends, my best friend at the time, and Rach (pregnant with Jace at the time) and Josh!  A great atmostphere, fun music, awesome food and wedding cake, a fantastic view of Vegas, a surprise coreographed dance by Bill and Jill, a memorable and entertaining dance with Andrew, Dad (the best man) making a toast, and Bill making a speech where he specifically thanked me for calligraphying their invitations. lol
5. Fro-Yo with JEM, Yolotti, South Tulsa... this is perhaps a strange choice, as it wasn't exactly a happy time for me... more like a time of being in stunned shock. But when I look back, I'm SO THANKFUL that this is part of my memory from that day (August 26, 2013, when I got the email severing my friendship with Malori). I knew some of my friends were busy that day, then I called Jeff and asked if he was busy - he had plans with someone - I don't even remember, but I guess he heard something in my voice that made him change his mind.  Perhaps panicky shock? lol But he told me he'd cancel his plans and come meet me at Yolotti, where we ate frozen yogurt and I told him more of what happened and he spoke lots of good, encouraging words of wisdom and comfort!  God knew what I needed that night, and I really needed to know I had friends who cared enough to drop everything to help me when I was feeling so unlovable and rejected, friends who would speak life and hope and remind me that Christ alone is my foundation! =)  (Thanks, Jeffrey - you're a JEM! lol)

Okay, now I'm finally off to watch the end of the Bedlam game with Sarah Elizabeth!! =)  Go pokes! lol (...I barely care.)

4 ~ Favorite Quote

"Life ain't all blueberries and paper airplanes, ya know what I mean?"

Definitely JK about that one, but I do love looking back at the many, many past Quotables posts HERE and HERE.

If I had to pick just one favorite right now, it would be this one, which barely counts since it's a paraphrase...

"When our souls feel crushed and overwhelmed, we believe ourselves to be tired of life; but it is death, not life, that wearies us.  In all our troubles, let us remember that what we lack is life – what we need is more life, more of God’s powerful presence in us that makes us more alive and whole!  When we feel broken and tired of life, let us recognize that it is actually the presence of death in this world that we are tired of.  When we feel most inclined to give up, let us rouse ourselves to live.  Of all things, let us avoid the false refuge of a weary collapse, a hopeless yielding to things as they are.  The dissatisfied ache we experience is caused by the life of God in us is crying out for more life (more beauty, freedom, restoration, love, and healing).  We are victorious when, in the midst of our pain and weakness, we cry out  -- not for death or numbness  – but for the strength to fight; for more power, more understanding, more of God in us!"
~George MacDonald (paraphrased)

I love it because it's good, strong encouragement to choose life, which is my 2017 theme. My very favorite line = "When we feel broken and tired of life, let us recognize that it is actually the presence of death in this world that we are tired of."  AMEN!

In other news, Happy Birthday to Elizabeth today!! I got to see her at book club this morning, then again for an early lunch with Tiffany at Miss Scarlett's Tea Room!  She came back to tour the courthouse, but I didn't have my office keys with me, so the tour included us peering in at the courtroom through the window in the door. LOL

Happy Friday and happy bedlam game weekend!! =)

3- Pet Peeves

I have a much easier time thinking of my quirks than my pet peeves, but I wrote about my quirky stuff last time, so I'm trying to think of pet peeves today...

  1. The squeeeeachy feel and/or sound of balloons and styrofoam to-go boxes. I know that's random, but it's verrrry cringy to me! Like what nails on a chalkboard is to lots of people.
  2. Christian movies that are not only cheesy and sappy, but water down the gospel, show unrealistic dramatic conversions, make the post-salvation life transformation appear to be instantaneous rather than a long process, make heaven appear vague and strange and undesirable, and try to cram waaaay too much into two hours. As a conservative Christian, it's irritating to me when we can't do better than this. #lettherebelight
  3. Miley Cyrus - the way she dresses, her overblown and desperate-for-attention personality, even the way her mouth moves when she talks. I ❤ Blake and Adam and Jennifer Hudson, but I must avoid The Voice as long as she's a coach. Just no.
  4. When people say, "I'm sorry if that upsets you" rather than "I'm sorry." Any apology where the person takes no actual responsibility for their actions and pretends you're overdramatic to be hurt by their behavior. Not good enough.
  5. When attorneys let their criminal clients stand RIGHT NEXT TO ME. I sit out in front of the Judge's bench, so I'm closer than I want to be already, but the more thoughtful attorneys will put themselves between me and their client. People tend to be well behaved in the courtroom, but still, when I'm seated inches away from an un-handcuffed man entering a plea for a violent crime, it is not my favorite thing.  I'm always alert and ready to Jason-Bourne-style attack them with my pen if anything should go down! lol

In other news, here's a couple recent pics... Google Photos made me this Halloween album. Before our Zio's dinner, Tiffany and I went to FBC to see the Wilsons, then to Anthem to see the Mosses and Elizabeth!  =) Trunk-or-Treating with Chettles was highly entertaining - lots of fun commentary or character voices to go with the kids' costumes!

My favorite quote of the night...
Chet to random girl coming for candy: "Red Robin!!"
Girl, looking annoyed: "Red Riding Hood."
Chet: "Oh, yeah - whatever, that's what I meant."
Me, laughing: "Red Robin is a restaurant."
Chet: "Oh, it's so much funnier now!"
Me:  "Reeeed Robin... YUM!!"

How cute is the Miss K!?  This also makes me excited for Christmas! ❤❤

Made my first pot roast yesterday - yummers!!

Okay, that's all. Happy Thursday!

2 - Let There Be Light

Today = my blog title meaning & why I blog.

"Let there be light" = the first four words directly spoken by God in the Bible, the words that started the process of creating this world as we know it!! I don't believe God does anything accidentally, and I love the power and majesty and purpose in those words!  I think it's cool that He did not create the sun, moon, and stars until day four... so He was the only source point of light in the beginning, just as it will be in heaven.

The Bible also talks about Jesus being the light of the world and about His light shining through our lives, so the dual meaning is to let Jesus in and let His light and truth overcome the darkness inside you and around you. It's a good reminder for me to turn to Him when things feel dark, as well as a good reminder that I'm called to be a light in a dark world.
"And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness." ~Genesis 1:3-4
"This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all." ~1 John 1:5
"In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." ~John 1:4
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." ~Matthew 5:16
As for why I blog, the reasons are many...  I love having this record of the many quotes, verses, memories, people, places, struggles, growth, healing, etc. that have shaped my life.  I enjoy writing and having a place to do that where it doesn't feel nearly as intimidating or serious as writing a book, it doesn't need to be perfect or polished, and it can uniquely reflect my personality and moods with different pictures, fonts, colors, songs, Flipagram slideshows, backgrounds, etc. As a single woman who has lived alone for the majority of the last 11 years, this gives me an outlet - a way to say what I need to say without feeling obnoxious or draining to my friends or family - they can read if and when they want to, or they can skip it, but either way, simply pressing "Publish" gives me the sense of feeling heard and seen and valued. So I'm thankful for that, too!
