Today = One of your favorite TV shows
That is not a short list for me! lol But since I've already written about Friends, Frasier, Gilmore Girls, Downton Abbey, etc. here, my choice for today is Grey's Anatomy. #shondaland #bringonthedrama
I know that it's sometimes trashy or cheesy or overly political, but sometimes it's brilliant and cathartic and deeply meaningful! I haven't watched it a million times like some of my other shows, but it is sentimental to me if only for the fact that it's been a part of my life for so long...
- Waaaaay back in March of 2005, in the early days of my Chickasha job, when Rach and I were still living with Mom and Dad at 9121, before I even met JMM, a brand new medical drama show premiered on ABC... Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, Alex Karev, and George O'Malley were starting their first year as surgical interns, working with Chief Richard Webber, Dr. Derek Shepherd, Dr. Preston Burke, and Dr. Miranda Bailey!
- In the September 2005 season 2 premier, Cristina tells Meredith she is her "person." (That wasn't a widely-used term before Grey's, but it definitely caught on.) By then, I had firmly decided that Josh was my person. lol
- The Izzie and Denny LVAD wire finale aired around the time of the summer 2006 Boston trip with Josh & co., and 2006 me understood every bit of her craziness!
- I remember being excited to watch the George/Callie/Izzie love triangle episode with Kate the night before our cruise in March 2007! (And realizing that I was rooting for the underdog/hurting woman on both sides of that situation.)
- An episode titled "Great Expectations" aired in January 2007 when I first moved to Tulsa - the title fits my life timeline. lol
- I got "the letter" from Josh that summer around the same time Burke left Cristina at the altar... the "All we can do is keep breathing" song and "Didn't We Almost Have it All" finale episode title also seemed fitting that year.
- Malori and I watched the show a lot when we were roommates, and after she moved to OKC, I remember having a long talk about the season 6 two-part finale with the shooter in 2010!
- Our friendship ended catastrophically not long after the "Perfect Storm" season 9 finale in 2013.
- My year of building inner strength and resilience coincided with the 2015 "You're My Home" finale, which will always be among my favorite episodes if only for the ending voice-over monologue...
I also loved last year's finale voice-over monologue: "A recent study found that marriage has actual health benefits. Married people live longer, have fewer strokes, and fewer heart attacks than people who are single. Scientific or not, I find that study incredibly irritating... Happily, there are other studies that tell us the real truth about the health benefits of marriage, because those studies have shown that staying in an unhappy marriage is the worst thing you can do for your health and for your children. So better health is a direct result of healthy relationships. You don't need a spouse. You just need someone you can trust. You need someone you can talk to. You need someone who will celebrate your wins and grieve your losses. You need someone who can forgive you. You need someone who will show up, no questions asked, and walk with you through every unexpected twist and turn life throws your way."

At first, I really didn't like it when the new group of interns would come in every season. Now that's a big part of what I love about this show - the way the cast keeps shifting and changing, and the idea that people can keep going and growing after severe relational loss. It's done good things for my soul to see that, even in a fictional TV show.
Our lives and core relationships change in so many ways we never see coming, but some things do stay the same, and some people do stick around, and that's why Alex and Meredith have become my favorite friendship (and my favorite individual characters for the way they have both changed and grown)!!
So anyway, cheers to Grey's Anatomy being renewed for two more seasons and becoming the longest-running medical drama of all time!! ❤
